The climate in Frigiliana is directly influenced by the Mediterranean, making it warm and temperate. There are 304 days of sunshine per year, and the average temperature
is 18º C. (About 66 F.)
According to some theories, Frigiliana was established 3.000 years ago by the Phoenicians. Later it belonged to the Roman Empire, but it flourished later under the Arab ocupation whose influences can be seen so much in today's Spain. It was in that era that Frigiliana became one of the most important cities of the area with 3.000 inhabitants.
Eight centuries of Arab occupation affected Frigiliana, so much so, that 100 years after the Catholic Kings conquered Andalusia, its 3.000 inhabitants declared themselves to be muslins and started a "suicide" war against the extremely powerful Spanish Empire.
Today, it's enough to walk through this town, (winner of the NATIONAL COMPETITION OF BEAUTIFUL TOWNS) of steep, narrow streets to see how little it has changed since 1491. Its Arabic roots are not only obvious in the towns architecture of white-washed houses, but also in its customs and age-old festivals, in its ceramics, and its famous cuisine, etc.
The land in this area is extremely fertile and the agricultural methods used date back one thousand years, for example, the irrigation system was created by the Arabs there is a very limited use of machinary and the use of the mule is still essential.
It rained the day we visited, and the buildings which are all white washed with a blueing agent, turn a light blue when it rains. We did find a ceramic shop there with very good prices. It was a hard walk to to the top, but when we got there, the view was worth it.
