Almost two years ago (Has it been that long!?!) I built my first web page. It was hosted on a free web server and had limited capabilities. But, I didn't care. It was so cool to have my very own web page!
Eventually, I learned a little bit about HTML, and I started putting up some graphics. What I wanted, though, was a nice looking counter. The one that the free web host offered was boring, and it didn't look good. So, I combed the web in search of the perfect free counter. I found one, and put it on my page.
What I remember most about this counter was, they offered this "thing", where they would tell me who my visitors were, what type of browser they were using, and where they came from. "Hmmm," I thought. "Interesting. Anyway....."
Now that I have a bit more knowledge of business on the web, I realize what an INVALUABLE service this was, and for FREE! I have racked my brain, trying to remember the name of the company that gave me that free counter, but I haven't been able to find it.
In the "real world", it's easy to figure out where your inquiries and orders are coming from. Why? Because advertising costs so much, you only have a few ads out there. You can "key" them easily. But on the web, where most of us have, literally, hundreds, or even thousands of ads out there, it's no small task.
Wouldn't it be great to know which ads are working, and which aren't? Not only would it be great, but on the web, it's a must. You HAVE to know where your visitors are coming from. Otherwise, you may be wasting precious time placing hundreds of ads that no one will ever see.
There are a few programs out there, for sale, that will tell you where your hits are originating, but I'm not going to plug them, here. Most cost upwards of $300.00 and I know, being an online marketer myself, that when you're just starting out, "free" is a beautiful word.
I've found two places that offer this service free. The only drawback to using them is, you have to place their graphic on your page for the program to work. But, as I see it, the benefits vastly outweigh the negatives. Would you place one more banner on your page to be able to find out exactly what URL your visitor came from? Mmm hmmm, that's what I thought. I ha
ve to wonder about the people who run these free services. Do they have any idea what a good thing they're doing? I'd like to know their names, so I can put them on my Christmas list. They've saved me so much extra work, and actually helped boost my profits. The two services I found are:
Site Tracker - http://www.sitetracker.com
Hit Meter http://www.hitmeter.com
There may be more of these free services out there, but I doubt there are too many. If you find any, let me know. I'll send them all the business they can handle.
The information you'll get about your visitors is amazing. They'll tell you the IP address, the browser being used, what time they visited, how long they stayed, and most importantly, where they came from. You'll even see which keywords they used if they found you on a search engine. And you can check your reports as often as you like.
Well, what are you waiting for?

Newspaper Publicity
"I've tried sending out a few press releases to the newspaper, but they never print them."
Here's why. Newspaper editors look for press releases that are "newsworthy." Newsworthy simply means that the story is one that lots of readers will find interesting.
I asked a newspaper editor what she looked for and here are some of the guidelines she gave:
Editors like stories where people overcome adversity or perform acts of kindness.
Editors like stories that appeal to a wider audience and transcend your neighborhood or industry.
Editors like stories that give the reader some kind of emotion: happy, mad, afraid, proud.
Keep in mind that news must be new. An event that happened months ago will not be of interest to the newspaper. Of course, if something new happens that closely relates to an event months ago, the old event could become news again.
Don't get discouraged if your first press releases don't get into the paper. Look over them and think what you could do differently next time. Newsworthy-ness is the key.

Jake is struggling through an airport terminal with two huge and obviously heavy suitcases when a stranger walks up to him and asks: "Have you got the time?"
Jake sighs, puts down the suitcases and glances at his wrist. "It's a quarter to six," he says.
"Hey, that's a pretty fancy watch!" exclaims the stranger.
Jake brightens a little. "Yeah, it's not bad. Check this out," and he shows him a time zone display not just for every time zone in the world, but for the 86 largest metropoli. He hits a few buttons and from somewhere on the watch a voice says "The time is 11 till six" in a very West Texas accent. A few more buttons and the same voice says something in Japanese. Jake continues, "I've put in regional accents for each city. The display is unbelievably high quality and the voice is simply astounding." The stranger is struck dumb with admiration.
"That's not all," says Jake. He pushes a few more buttons and a tiny but very high-resolution map of New York City appears on the display. "The flashing dot shows our location by satellite positioning," explains Jake. "View recede ten," Jake says, and the display changes to show eastern New York state.
"I want to buy this watch!" says the stranger.
"Oh, no, it's not ready for sale yet; I'm still working out the bugs," says the inventor. "But look at this," and he proceeds to demonstrate that "the watch is also a very creditable little FM radio receiver with a digital tuner, a sonar device that can measure distances up to 125 meters, a pager with thermal paper printout and, most impressive of all, the capacity for voice recordings of up to 300 standard-size books, though I only have 32 of my favorites in there so far," says Jake.
"I've got to have this watch!" says the stranger.
"No, you don't understand; it's not ready."
"I'll give you $1,000 for it!"
"Oh, no, I've already spent more than ..."
"I'll give you $5,000 for it!"
"But it's just not ..."
"I'll give you $15,000 for it!" And the stranger pulls out a checkbook.
Jake stops to think. He's only put about $8,500 into materials and development, and with $15,000 he can make another one and have it ready for merchandising in only six months. The stranger frantically finishes writing the check and waves it in front of him.
"Here it is, ready to hand to you right here and now. $15,000. Take it or leave it."
Jake abruptly makes his decision. "OK," he says, and peels off the watch and hands it to the stranger.
They make the exchange and the stranger starts happily away.
"Hey, wait a minute," calls Jake after the stranger, who turns around warily. Jake points to the two suitcases he had been trying to wrestle through the terminal. "Don't forget your batteries."

Ergo Tips:)
(We recommend that you consult your own physician regarding specific problems. These answers are for general informational purposes only.)
Today we have a question very different from most. A reader writes, "the skin on the back of my neck, right where the shirt company sews on the size label, always is extremely sensitive and I could swear it gets worse the longer I sit at the computer. I have to tear the labels out of all my clothes. Am I imagining that this is an ergo-related problem?"
Dr. Murray Grossan answers with the following: This is a new problem we haven't heard before. Sounds like it is midline which doesn't help localize it as to one of the nerves from the spine to the skin. There may be a pinching of one of these nerves. At a certain age, new bone is laid down and this may be pinching or irritating a nerve. A neurologist can map the area out and tell you which nerve is involved. You may end up needing an MRI. Until you get to the neurologist, you might try a Vitamin B complex, 100mg twice a day. Sometimes this reduces nerve hypersensitivity."
Thanks for reading us. Please send your questions to medpad@evansville.net. Due to the number of questions we receive, we cannot answer each one personally, but look for your answer in future issues. If it ain't broke - don't fix it.
We have all heard this advice in the past, and most of the time we heed it. But we are getting so much advice these days on the web, that we sometimes tend to doubt what WE are doing.
If what you are doing works for you, don't change it simply because some "Guru" says you should do it this way. Does that mean you shouldn't listen to what is said?
Of course not - but keep it perspective. If something makes sense, try it - if it doesn't, move on.
Any day that goes by that you don't learn something is a bad day. Be like a sponge and absorb everything that you read. Some of it will make sense for YOU.

Bob, I compose my mail off line, then proof read it, correct, etc, Then I paste it to outbound letters and move it over to the e-mail program. I compose on line only when answering mail. Is there a better way to do this.
Ron - NUVT97A@Prodigy.com
-----
Ron - my feeling is that you should probably use an offline mail program. Since you are a Prodigy Member, I would recommend E-mail Connection which is available free from Prodigy. From the top bar of the Prodigy Home Page, click on "GoTo" and enter "About EMC". You will be guided through the download and installation process. This allows you to write your mail offline, has a built in spell checker, an address book and allows you to save your incoming mail and outgoing mail in folders you can set up. If you are doing business online, this is a must.
Choosing an Effective Affiliate Program by Kevin Needham.
This "key element" hidden from the reader may seem simple and basic, but it is used lavishly by every major wealth building advertiser in nearly all national magazines; yet the majority of us are simply blind to it. Many of these advertisers long ago became multi-millionaires because this element has been honed to such a fine degree. The readers attention is deliberately diverted from the real money making opportunity, which is designed to earn a larger income for the promoter than for the buyer.
So much for the mystery! Now just what is this hidden "key element?" Would you believe that it is the advertising itself?
Enormous fortunes are continually being made by those who have recognized the difference between what they are selling versus getting people to "buy it!". It may be nothing more than outright "flim flam", for which reason most of us have been victims at one time or another. By purchasing many of these plans I often have become the "willing victim" in order to find out that the "real" money maker was the promoter's advertising!
When I finally learned this, I was stunned! Most people like me think, sure, the promoters are bound to make money, and that is the point. They do! And that is the new position I took, and the position you should be in, because the minute you recognize that you must be the advertiser, you will begin to make money.
Most buyers of wealth plans do not think of advertising anything of their own, since they assume that the "plan" is going to provide the means by which to make money. In fact, even if the "plan" includes prepared advertising, most people don't even consider the aspect of advertising itself as the principle means by which to make a fortune!
The "key element" in making large sums of money is not necessarily to develop an amazing book or product, or using already prepared advertising, but to attract--on your own-- many thousands of potential buyers by use of a "knock' em dead" ad, then to provide something to justify the ad in the first place.
Many folks spend far too much time analyzing, fretting and fine tuning the product and/or service. "This is wrong" - One should spend 90% of the time fine tuning the AD. The rest on the product/service. Marketing holds sway over ALL!
The best approach is the 2 step - Use a "knock' em dead" ad to generate a tidal wave of responses, then send them a "barn-burner" of a sales letter to close the sale!

INTERNET PROVIDER NOT LIABLE FOR MESSAGES OF
ITS CUSTOMERS
An appeals court in Florida has ruled against
a woman who sued America Online because one of its customers, a convicted
sex offender, used an AOL chat group to try to sell the woman's 11-year-old
son a pornographic video. The court said that federal law protects online
services from being held liable for the messages transmitted by their members
sell the videotape of the boy. The defeated lawsuit, which is being appealed
to the Supreme Court, tried to characterize America Online as "a home shopping
network for pedophiles and child pornographers."
SPOOF ON AOL CAUSES MISROUTED MAIL
Someone impersonating an America Online individual
authorized to change AOL's InterNIC records caused thousands of e-mail
messages intended for AOL customers to be misrouted to the Internet service
provider Autonet.net. AOL discovered the problem and corrected it, and
says that all misdirected messages should eventually be delivered to the
proper recipients. The company is working with legal authorities to identify
the perpetrator.
