                          Tip of the Day
Copy Floppy to CD
Many of the newer computers don’t have a floppy drive as they are
going the way of the dinosaur. In fact, if you want a floppy,
you will probably pay a bit more for your system.
Many options for data storage are on the market that have a
larger capacity than our familiar little disk - CD-R/RW, DVD,
Flash Memory, portable hard drives, and USB keys ("thumb
drives"). While many of us still have floppy drives in our
computers, now might be a good time to transfer them onto CD!
Here is the easiest way I found to copy your floppies to CD-
R/RW...
1. Create a folder on your desktop. Click the folder and hit F2
   to rename (give it a name that will remind you what is in the
   folder). I created sub-folders within that to correspond with
   the name of the floppy.
2. Open the floppy in your drive and hit Ctrl+A to select all.
   NOTE: Make sure that your folder option view is set to show
   hidden files (Tools/Folder Options/View, "Show hidden files
   and folders"), otherwise you might not copy all the files from
   the floppy.
3. Copy (Ctrl+C) the files then paste (Ctrl+V) into your new
   folder. This is a great time to "prune" any files you don't
   want to keep. If you create several folders, you could also
   sort the contents before you burn.
4. Now you are ready to burn your files to CD. In most cases it
   is as simple as dragging the folders into a frame in your CD
   burning program.
The great thing is that the average floppy holds 1.44 MB of data,
while a CD-R can hold 700 MB—that means you can fit about 486
floppies on 1 CD-R!
For XP users: after you select the files you want to transfer (or
Ctrl+A), you can click "Copy the selected items" in the left hand
column which opens a window where you can select where you want
the files to go.From there you can send it to the new folder you
created in step 1.

                     Today in History
Battle of Richmond, Kentucky
On this date in 1862, Confederates under Edmund Kirby Smith
routed a Union army at Richmond, Kentucky, in one of the most
lopsided engagements of the Civil War.
As part of an attempt by the Confederates to drive the Yankees
from central Tennessee and Kentucky, Smith moved toward
Lexington, Kentucky, with about 19,000 troops in search of
supplies. Facing him was a Union force under General Horatio
Wright, who was sitting atop a palisade along the Kentucky River
just south of Lexington. Part of Wright's force, under the
command of General Mahlon D. Manson, did not receive orders to
fall back to the river. Instead, Manson placed his 6,500 troops
on high gr ound around Richmond, further south of the Kentucky
River.
On the morning of August 30, Smith's force collided with Manson's
south of Richmond. The Confederates soon routed the Yankees, many
of whom were new soldiers with no battle experience. After
retreating two miles, Manson's troops mounted a counteratta ck
but were repulsed. The Union force retreated again, and the
Confederates followed with a withering attack. This time, the
Yankee retreat was cut off by Colonel John Scott's Confederate
cavalry force.
The loss was complete for the Yankees. Fewer than 1,200 of the
6,500 Federals escaped, and more than 4,300 were captured.
Confederate losses stood at 98 killed, 492 wounded, and 10
missing out of 6,800. Among those captured were Manson and his
entire staff. The Confederates captured Lexington two days later.

                         Technology News
DNA Analysis Used To Fight Spam
Researchers at IBM's TJ Watson Research Center have modified an
algorithm--originally created to discern patterns in protein
sequencing--to serve as a spam filter. The algorithm, named
Chung-Kwei after a Feng Shui character, analyzes e-mail, looking
for patterns of letters that exist in spam but not in legitimate
messages.
Because of the amount of spam in circulation today, the
researchers have an abundance of spam e-mail to feed to the
algorithm to train it to identify those strings of characters
that indicate a message is spam. Chung-Kwei is able to process
88,000 messages in about 15 minutes, said
the researchers, and will continue to "learn" as more e-mail
arrives.
The tool is able, for example, to identify e-mails that have "S"
replaced with "$" as spam. Researchers said Chung-Kwei is able to
successfully detect nearly 97 percent of spam.

One-Product Sales Sites: Avoid These Top Blunders

One product, one long web page: this kind of web site is
sometimes called a sales letter site or mini-site, and it focuses
on one and only one goal, as many sales of that one product as
possible. With a one-product sales site, no distractions, no
subsidiary goals, such as newsletter signups, are allowed to
interfere with that goal. So let's look at some common mistakes
and omissions for a sales letter site.
Your headline serves as the key point of orientation for the
reader and should be as strongly worded and pointedly targeted as
you can manage. Do not use the name of your product as the
headline - that's a weak marketing message. Instead, dramatize
either the problem solved by your product or the solution
offered, or both. For instance:
     Discover Your Family's Roots Through Easy, Fun Internet
     Research
You can often add a subhead after the headline for even greater
punch:
     Turn Words into Money with Copy That Even a Skinflint
     Can't Resist!

     Get a Juicier Return on Investment from Your Marketing
     With the Easy-to-Apply Secrets in This New Manual
Normally you want to start your sales page by building rapport
with the reader with respect to the problem or goal at hand.
Make sure, however, that you not only make your case in a
positive way for your product but also address and head off each
and every worry, objection or doubt the reader might have about
buying your product. For instance, how can you know so much
about knee injuries if you're not a doctor? Or, do these money-
saving strategies apply if I live in Canada or Bermuda?
The biggest worry people have buying online from companies
or individuals they've never heard of is, are you trustworthy?
Am I going to get what I order and have some recourse if it's a
pile of crap? A money-back guarantee goes part of the way toward
assuaging this, as do testimonials, but just as important, and
much more often neglected, is posting a mailing address and
telephone number for the vendor.
If it's a physical product that will be shipped, make sure you
explicitly say how and when it will be shipped and whether you
can ship it anywhere in the world for that price. Don't make the
reader click through to the order form to learn how much your
product costs, or how much it costs with shipping.
As your copy builds toward its conclusion, remember to include
what marketers term the "call to action": explicitly ask for the
order. Do so prominently, so that someone skipping down the page
can quickly find the "order now" button. Even better, insert an
order button or link near the top of the page so that someone who
arrives already wanting to buy can do so immediately.
When you've built the strongest possible case for your product
and orchestrated your pitch properly, consider the formatting of
your sales page. Since this sort of site doesn't have a left
navigation bar, the column of text often ends up much too wide
for comfortable reading. Studies have shown that paragraphs
wider than six or seven inches are difficult to read on a
computer screen. Add blank columns to the left and right of your
sales copy to narrow it to that width.
Make sure too that paragraphs go on no more than seven lines, and
a long run of paragraphs is broken up by subheads. And make
those subheads interesting and meaty. Someone who skims down the
page should be able to get the gist of your marketing message
just from reading the subheads.

                   "Cooking for the Empty Nest"
                        Recipe of the Week

Salsa Pizza
1 8-oz. package crescent rolls
1 8-oz. package light cream cheese, softened
1/3 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 large fresh tomatoes, seeded and diced
1 large sweet onion, chopped
1 Tbsp. lime juice
2 serrano chiles, seeded and chopped
1/4 cup Mexican beer
Dash of sugar
Spread out crescent rolls evenly onto lightly greased baking
sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Allow to cool.
Meanwhile, combine cream cheese, cilantro and garlic in a bowl
and mix well. In a separate bowl, combine tomatoes, onion, lime
juic e, chiles, beer and sugar and mix well. Spread cream cheese
mixture over rolls and top with tomato mixture. Slice and serve.
If you prefer you may use homemade pizza crust or pre-made store
bought pizza crust instead of crescent rolls.
