Tip of the Day
Do You Know What Files You're Deleting
Before you delete files with Disk Cleanup, make
sure you know
what you're deleting. The first two items you'll
find in the
Files to remove list are Temporary Internet Files
and Downloaded
Program Files, both of which refer to directories
that your
browser uses.
If you delete these files, you'll just end up
downloading them
again the next time you visit the Web pages.
If the pages are on
your hard disk, however, they'll load a lot faster.
If you clean
out these directories too often you'll waste
time and wind up
downloading the same pages over and over.
The Files to remove list shows how much disk space
you'll
reclaim by deleting each item.
If you'll gain only a few megabytes by selecting
these two
choices, you may want to uncheck the boxes.
The third choice on the Files to remove list is
Recycle Bin;
checking it will empty it. The Temporary files
option lets
you delete files that various programs have put
on your
disk. These are almost always safe to delete.
The fourth choice is Temporary Files, and this
also is safe to
delete.
My recommendation is that you do a disk cleanup
once a month, and
delete all files it finds.

Today in History
On this date in 1940, after two months of desperate
resistance,
the last surviving Norwegian and British defenders
of Norway were
overwhelmed by the Germans, and the country was
forced to
capitulate to the Nazis.
Two months earlier, on April 9, Nazi Germany launched
its
invasion of Norway, capturing several strategic
points along the
Norwegian coast. During the preliminary phase
of the invasion,
Norwegian fascist forces under Vidkun Quisling
acted as a
so-called "fifth column" for the German invaders,
seizing
Norway's nerve centers, spreading false rumors,
and occupying
military bases and other locations.
Quisling was the head of the only political party
permitted by
the Nazis. Opposition to him in Norway was so
great that it was
not until February 1942 that he was able to formally
establish
his puppet government in Oslo.
Under the authority of his Nazi commissioner,
Josef Terboven,
Quisling set up a repressive regime that was
merciless toward
those who defied it. However, Norway's resistance
movement soon
became the most effective in all Nazi-occupied
Europe, and
Quisling's authority rapidly waned.
After the German surrender in May 1945, Quisling
was arrested,
convicted of high treason, and shot. From his
name comes the word
quisling, meaning "traitor" in several languages.

Technology News
Consumers Group Sues Over TV Rights
The Electronic Frontier Foundation has filed a
lawsuit in federal
court to try to establish the legality of devices
that let
consumers watch television programming without
commercials and
send copies of programs over the Internet.
The suit names as defendants many of the media
companies that
recently sued SonicBlue, the maker of one such
device. Media
companies, which are concerned about their revenue
from
advertising, argue that watching programs without
commercials is
tantamount to theft and that transmitting an
entire program over
the Internet, as happens now with music files,
is a violation of
intellectual property rights.
An attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation
said there's
a difference between being in a movie theater
and in one's living
room, and that the entertainment industry is
trying to control
consumers' personal habits.

The Affiliate Connection To Higher Income
Whether you sell a service or a product you can
increase your
income base by partnering with companies through
affiliate
programs. Affiliate programs allow you to offer
a greater range
of services without actually having to deliver
the product. This
is one of the few opportunities inclusive to
E-Commerce and well
worth the extra time. Not only will you make
more money but you
will increase options for your clients as well.
However, there
are a few key elements to making affiliate programs
really work
for you and to collecting commission checks that
make it worth
your time.
When joining an affiliate program consider if
the service or
product being sold compliments the theme of your
web site. If for
instance you sell nutritional products for horses,
selling
entertainment CD's won't blend with your theme.
This type of
marketing will confuse your customers and give
them the feeling
that they are being mass marketed to (instead
of) taken care of.
You want to maintain credibility so join programs
that compliment
your own efforts and give your clients a sense
of continuity.
CONSIDER THE REPUTATION BECAUSE IT BECOMES YOURS
Before partnering with a company carefully consider
their
reputation. A less desirable repute will directly
reflect on you.
At times this will be unavoidable but a little
research will go a
long way to protecting yourself and your customers.
In other
words, ask questions, and evaluate the product
or service as if
you were purchasing for yourself.
While I firmly believe that it's better to own
what you sell, it
isn't always necessary to buy the product before
you promote it
but, it must meet your standards before you resell

PLAN YOUR MARKETING STRATEGY
As with any aspect of your business, planning
is very important.

customers you can expect sketchy results. Instead,
integrate your
affiliate program promotions into your business
plan. Use
rotating banners at your site to promote the
various programs.
Write testimonials into your weekly newsletter
to promote one or
two programs a week. Most often your personal
recommendation or
endorsement is all you need to be really successful
at affiliate
promotions.

marketing tools?
Remember, the less they supply, the more you will
need to create
for yourself. Before creating your own materials,
make certain
the pay rate is worth the extra time involved.
3. LONG TERM (RESIDUAL): Do you get paid on the
first purchase or
every purchase?
Being involved with an affiliate program that
shares the same
customer with you (over and over again) is by
far, the best
relationship to consider. However, if you join
a program that
pays only for the first purchase, it would be
ideal for you to
collect information about that buyer before they
leave your
website. Without asking your visitor to supply
you with their
information, you've essentially lost the ability
to capitalize on
future sales.

"Cooking for the Empty Nest"
Recipe of the Week

Persian Cabbage Rolls
Want to serve something unique? This dish
is made with split
peas, beef, and lemon beef sauce. Very tasty!
Ingredients:
1/2 cup split peas
1 large head cabbage
1 pound ground beef
1 cup chopped onions
1/2 cup chopped parsley
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 1/2 cups beef broth
1/2 cup lemon juice
1/4 cup sugar
Directions:
Cook the peas in boiling water 30 minutes or
until tender. Drain.
Wash the cabbage and take out the core, cover
with water, bring
to a boil, and cook over low heat 15 minutes.
Drain, cool
slightly, and carefully remove 24 leaves. Reserve
the balance of
the cabbage.
Mix together the peas, beef, onions, parsley,
cinnamon,
1 teaspoon of the salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of the
pepper. Put a
heaping tablespoon of the mixture on each cabbage
leaf. Fold in
the opposite ends, then roll up into sausage
shapes. If there is
any filling left, use a few more cabbage leaves.
Line the bottom of a deep skillet with extra cabbage
leaves and
arrange the rolls on top in layers, placing more
leaves between
each layer. Add the broth and the remaining salt
and pepper, then
cover with more cabbage leaves. Cover the skillet
and cook over
low heat 30 minutes. Mix in the lemon juice and
sugar and cook
for 30 minutes longer; taste for seasoning. Serves
6-8.
