On this day in 1982, as part of a four-day national salute to
Americans who served in the Vietnam War, the Vietnam Veterans
Memorial, designed by architect Maya Lin, was dedicated in
Washington, D.C. The long-awaited memorial is a simple black
granit e wall, inscribed with the names of the 58,183 Americans
who died in the conflict, arranged in order of death, not rank.Many veterans' groups were opposed to Lin's winning design from
its announcement, and the final result, which lacks a standard
memorial's heroic statues and stirring words, is greeted with
disappointment. However, a remarkable shift in public opinion
occurred after the official ceremony ended, and Americans begin
walking along the black reflective wall, viewing the names of
those killed in the conflict. People find a name of a loved one
and touch it, often making an etching or leaving a private
offering, from notes and flowers to dog tags and cans of beer.The Vietnam Veterans Memorial soon became one of the most visited
memorials in the nation's capital. A Smithsonian Institution
director calls it "a community of feelings, almost a sacred
precinct," and a veteran declares that "it's the parade we never
got." The wall draws together both those who fought and those who
marched against the war, and promotes a national healing.
