Internet Tip of the Week
by Bob Osgoodby

Ripe for the Picking

It seems we are obsessed with the concept of "Bigger, Better, Faster", however in the world of technology, it might very well be "Smaller, Better, Faster".  A few short years ago, the Pentium was the hot machine, and my first cell phone was an absolute clunker that looked like a World War II shortwave radio.

However, it seems that making things smaller is pretty much restricted to the hardware.  Because the capability is so much greater, it seems programmers have gotten sloppy, and could care less if the program runs efficiently.  Gone are the days when a program had to run in a minimum amount of memory.  Unheard of a few short years ago, a billion characters of memory is now the standard for the Vista Operating System. Disks store more data than ever, but in a smaller package.

But wait - we are discussing "Apples and Oranges" here.  Yes, the physical size has gotten smaller, but the capacity has lived up to the original concept of "Bigger, Better, Faster".  We are still near the very beginning of computers and who knows what the future will hold.

There is one thing however that will not change.  The new and inexperienced are joining in, and are ripe for the "Picking".  Like magic, their email addresses become known to the world, and the offers start rolling in. The con artists have simply had a change of venue, and are pursuing them relentlessly.

Some people really believe that they have been selected to be in the Internet Version of "Who's Who".  That con goes back many years, and now there is a new audience to rope in.  The old version of someone who found money, and will share it with you if you give them a good will deposit has changed a bit.  Today, someone has stolen money from a third world country, and want you to help get it out.  Of course, you will need to show your good faith.

Almost every con you encounter actually predates the computer, and has simply been brought up to date.  We receive hundreds of emails, and they all promise immense wealth in a short period of time.  And here is the best part - you don't have to work.  Well, if that were the case, we would all be sitting in our "skivvies" and telling our boss to "forget about it".

Folks - that is just not the case.  Can you earn a living on the Internet?  Sure!  But guess what - you still have to work for it. Forget about the "get rich quick" plans - they don't work.  If they did, we would all be rich.

Find yourself a "niche" that you can promote.  Many people have done this and are making a respectable living on the net.  Get yourself a domain name, build a website and market it.  The world however, will not beat a path to your door.  If you don't advertise, like any business you will not succeed. There are plenty of places to place your ads.  Some are free and others are not.

Ezines are a good bet.  They are being distributed to people who have asked to receive the information.  If they are a match for the market you want to target, they should be high on your list. Ezines that have a very large subscriber base, that are not a match for your market are normally not a good deal.  Advertise in smaller ones that are.

Forget about automatic submission software that sends your ad to FFA sites - it is a waste of money.  The ad you submit, will in all probability never be seen by a human.  The only people making any money from this submission software are the people selling the software.

While "Smaller, Better, Faster" might be appropriate in describing available hardware, it does not replace known and proven marketing techniques. The fact that you can send your ad free to large numbers of people, doesn't mean it will be read.  To make a living on the web, you still have to "earn it - the old fashioned way".

In The News

Shipwreck Treasure Found

Yesterday in Tampa, Florida, deep-sea explorers said they have found what could be the richest shipwreck treasure in history. It contained 17 tons of colonial-era silver and gold coins from an undisclosed site in the Atlantic Ocean. Estimated value: $500 million.

A jet chartered by Tampa-based Odyssey Marine Exploration landed in the United States recently with hundreds of plastic containers brimming with coins raised from the ocean floor. The more than 500,000 pieces are expected to fetch an average of $1,000 each from collectors and investors.

Computer Security Tips
by Syd Tash

Windows uses your random access memory (RAM) to run your programs and open windows for you as you surf the Internet.  It is the fastest memory in your computer.  It wasn’t that long ago that having 64MB of RAM was considered enormous.  Today, Vista needs 1 GB (one billion bytes) to run well.

When Windows runs out of space in RAM, it creates a “virtual” RAM on your hard disk, called a swap or page file.  It is a hidden system file that you normally don’t see.  It allows Windows to send data in and out of RAM as needed, keeping only the current page you are viewing actually in your RAM.

There are two problems here.  First, if your computer is allotting insufficient memory for this disk “RAM”, or if it is not configured properly, your PC’s performance will suffer instead of improve.  And second, that page file on your hard disk may soon contain all sorts of sensitive and personal information.  Remember, because it’s on your hard disk, the information is not lost when you turn off your computer, as is the data in your “real” RAM.

To solve the first problem, you can add more memory; this is not expensive nowadays.  Or you can optimize the swap file on disk. Check to see that Windows is using 100 MB or more for the swap or page file, or virtual memory.  Click Start, Control Panel, System, Advanced, Settings in the Performance section, Advanced.  At the bottom, under Virtual Memory, you will see how much memory Windows is using for the swap file, and also a button to change it. Click OK repeatedly to back out of this setting.

A more serious matter is deleting that confidential information in the swap file.  You can easily get Windows to clear this file for you, every time you shut your computer.  Do this:  Click Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Local Security Policy.  On the left, click the plus sign (“+”) next to Local Policies.  Click Security Options, and on the right, scroll down to “Shutdown: Clear Virtual Memory Pagefile”.

Double-click it.  In the new little dialog box, select “Enabled”.  Click Apply, click OK.  That’s it!  Your virtual memory file will now be wiped clean every time you shut down your computer.

Trivia

Spiders  have an exoskeleton, or a main body support on the outside of the body. For the spider, this means a shell-like structure that according to the species, may be made up of a number of shifting plates that encase its organs. That exoskeleton besides providing support, protects it from drying out, and from substantial injury to the soft tissues should it fall.

Trying to schedule a meeting with a prospect?

Stay away from questions that can be answered with a yes or no.  If you give the prospect a chance to say no and avoid the meeting most will.  Instead, ask questions that force a positive answer.  "Which would be better to meet, Wednesday or Thursday?"

A Little Humor to Start the Week

Amazingly Fit
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Five mornings a week, my husband goes to the health club, gets on the stair-stepper, sets the timer, and buries his nose in a book. Recently, he noticed an amazingly fit middle-aged woman who seemed to run circles around everyone, took few breaks, and rarely even broke a sweat.

"It's not fair," he complained. "By the time I'm dragging myself off to the showers, she's hopping back onto the stepper for another session."

One day he came home with a sheepish grin. "Well," he said, "I just found out -- they're identical twins."

A New York boy was being led through the swamps of Louisiana by his cousin.

"Is it true that an alligator won't attack you if you carry a flashlight ?"

The cousin smirked and replied, "Depends on how fast ya carry the flashlight."

A police officer pulls over a car load of nuns....

Officer: "Sister, this is a 65 MPH highway -- why are you going so slow?"

Sister: "Sir, I saw a lot of signs that said 22, not 65."

Officer: "Oh Sister, that's not the speed limit. That's the name of the highway you're on!"

Sister: "Oh! Silly me! Thanks for letting me know. I'll be more careful."

At this point the officer looks in the back seat where the other nuns are shaking and trembling.

Officer: "Excuse me, Sister, what's wrong with your friends back there? They're shaking something terrible."

Sister: "Oh, we just got off of highway 119."

As we stood in formation at the Pensacola Naval Air Station, our Flight Instructor said, "All right! All you dummies fall out."

As the rest of the squad wandered away, I remained at attention.

The instructor walked over until he was eye-to-eye with me, and then just raised a single eyebrow. I smiled and said, "Sure was a lot of 'em, huh sir?"
