Internet Tip of the Week
by Bob OsgoodbyPositive Cash Flow
People don't go into business normally as a hobby, although a lot of hobbies do turn into a business. The trick is to turn that hobby into a positive cash flow. If you're serious about doing business, you must plan for the long run.
Successful businesses don't normally just happen. They are the result of long hours of planning, and a great deal of work. There must be a "war chest" of funds available until a positive cash flow is achieved. One of the major problems that many encounter when starting up, is that they overextend their financial resources. No matter what your business, or how it is run, you must be able to meet current bills when they come due.
Every business has its peaks and valleys. During the Holiday Season for example, retailers have their peaks. Other businesses may suffer however, but even during the "lean" times they must still meet their monthly obligations.
A business that does fail, most likely has overextended themselves, to the point that their cash inflow wasn't enough to cover their expenses. When their "war chest" was depleted, they were gone. How does this affect the small entrepreneur? Can we learn a lesson from this?
Let's examine a program that the average person can get into. Affiliate Marketing is the current "buzzword" for Multi-Level Marketing, or MLM for short. MLM got a bad rap over the past six or seven years, due to the scamsters that abounded. The majority of their cash inflow was the result of signing up new members. When the cash flow from new recruits dried up, so did the investment of those who had joined.
Are there legitimate companies out there - sure and many have a great track record. They don't rely on attracting high priced recruits, but have a legitimate product or service that they offer. If you are going to get involved in one of these companies, that should be a major concern.
So - assuming you found such a company, it is time to investigate the feasibility of you going into business with them. They provide the product or service, and you must set yourself up in business. Here is where the cash flow comes into play.
Can you afford to promote your relationship with this business without immediate income? If so, how are you going to promote it? Most companies recommend you exhaust your "warm market" first. Your "warm market" is your circle of family and friends that you might convince to join in with you. Eventually however, you are going to exhaust this market and must start seeking people outside that circle.
One way to attract new people is in the online arena. While this will not replace the "face to face" contact that is necessary, if it is done correctly, it can add a valuable source of additional income.
Many people make the mistake of using a web site supplied by their company. While this can be a valuable tool, it really ties you into their product. If you get your own site, you can use it to highlight your offerings. It is of course necessary to advertise your web site, and ezines and newsletters usually give you the best return on your investment. With a modest investment on your part, you can realize a decent return.
Usually, for less than a few hundred dollars, you can get a web site and advertise in ezines targeted to your potential market. Most people can afford this without counting on their cash intake to cover the expenses. Determine what you can spend out of pocket to make something like this work. Then, as your cash flow improves, expand your advertising to include a broader market.
While this is a modest start, it doesn't put you in the position where you must realize income to make expenses. Above all be patient and realize it will take time and effort to realize your goals.

In The News
Vonage must disconnect Verizon technology from its telephone service
A federal court judge on Friday ordered Holmdel-based Vonage Holdings Corp. to stop using technology patented by Verizon Communications Inc. that allows its 2.2 million customers to make calls to standard telephone lines.
In Alexandria, Va., U.S. District Court Judge Claude Hilton granted Verizon a permanent injunction barring Vonage from using the telephone giant's technology, a move that could cripple the company unless it can win an appeal or figure out an alternate way to link its customers to traditional phone networks. If it can't, its customers would be limited to calling only other Internet telephone users.
The judge said he would wait to sign the injunction for two weeks, when he will consider Vonage's request for a stay.
On the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage shares plunged 26 percent, dropping to $3, down $1.05, a new all-time low.

Computer Security Tips
by Syd TashAs promised, today we are going to check your Custom HOSTS file, to see if it is corrupted. If you know nothing about HOSTS files, go here http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm after you finish reading this Newsletter. A good Custom HOSTS file keeps you away from known bad sites, helps prevent ads from being fed to you, blocks tracking cookies and spyware, and can even speed up your computer because your browser is not displaying ads.
However, malware has gotten so sophisticated in the last few years that it can block updates to your anti-virus program via the HOSTS file. So open your Custom HOSTS file occasionally, if you have one, and make sure your anti-virus program is NOT listed there. If it is, you may have a virus; just delete that line and run all your security scans.
In Windows XP, click Start, Search. Click “All files and folders”. On the left hand side, in the upper box, type HOSTS. In the lower box, select “Local Hard Drives (C:)”. Click Search. Wait. Click on the file marked HOSTS, and open it with Notepad or another text editor. Once in the HOSTS file, press Ctrl F to launch the search function. (If you see little or nothing in the file, you do not have a Custom HOSTS file. Follow the above link after finishing this Newsletter.)
In the Find what box, enter the name of your anti-virus program and click Find Next. Go through the whole file. If you find your anti-virus program, or if you find an address other than 127.0.0.1 (which is the address of your very own computer), delete the line and resave the file. This may sound complex, but after you’ve done it a few times, you’ll get the hang of it!

Trivia
When potatoes first appeared in Europe in the 17th century, it was thought that they were disgusting and were blamed for starting outbreaks of leprosy and syphilis. As late as 1720 in America, eating potatoes was believed to shorten a person's life.
Biz-Tips
by Kevin NunleyMarketing to Many Cultures
America used to be called "the melting pot" because it was considered a place where many cultures came to exist together and melt into each other. Today the more PC term for America is the "salad bowl," implying that we exist together, but don't really blend.
I would say we are somewhere in between; different cultures affect each other, but maintain their own traits, characteristics, and beliefs.
But in such a vastly diverse environment, how is a marketer to reach such a varied audience?
For one thing, you have to understand that no ad, article, or release is going to be appropriate for everyone. If you want to reach out to multicultural markets, try a series of ads, each focusing on a different audience. If that's too expensive, make an effort to incorporate elements of what would appeal to different cultures into an ad. But be careful not to go overboard.
The most important thing to do before you try to reach multicultural audiences is to understand them, just as you would any target demographic. What do different cultures value? What do they want? Don't rely on stereotypes and never make assumptions. Educate yourself before you attempt any marketing.

A new preacher had just begun his sermon. He was a little nervous and about ten minutes into the talk his mind went blank. He remembered some advice they gave him in seminary school when a situation like this arose -- repeat your last point. Often this will help you remember what should come next. So he gave it a try.
"Behold, I come quickly," he said. Still his mind was blank. So he tried again, "Behold, I come quickly!" Still nothing.
He tried once more, this time with so much vehemence that he tripped over his microphone wire and fell off the stage, right into the lap of a little old lady in the front row.
The young preacher was very embarrassed and tried to apologize, but the woman replied, "That's all right, young man. It was my fault... I should have gotten out of the way. You told me three times you were coming!"

Miss Jones had been giving her second-grade students a lesson on science. She had explained about magnets and showed how they would pick up nails and other bits of iron. Now it was question time and she asked, "My name begins with the letter 'M' and I pick up things. What am I?"
A little boy on the front row said, "You're a mother."

A story is told of a Jewish man who was riding on the subway reading an Arab newspaper. A friend of his, who happened to be riding in the same subway car, noticed this strange phenomenon. Very upset, he approached the newspaper reader "Moshe, have you lost your mind? Why are you reading an Arab newspaper?"
Moshe replied "I used to read the Jewish newspaper, but what did I find? Jews being persecuted, Israel being attacked, Jews disappearing through assimilation and intermarriage, Jews living in poverty. So I switched to the Arab newspaper. Now what do I find? Jews own all the banks, Jews control the media, Jews are all rich and powerful, Jews rule the world. The news is so much better."
