 The Personal Approach
by Bob Osgoodby

Ever try to call a company for information or assistance, and have to fight your way through a seemingly unending maze of instructions from an automated robot.  "For this press one; for that press two", and so on. Some companies take you several layers deep in options before you get the choice of speaking with a live human being. I understand the efficiency involved, but at what cost?  Usually it is at the expense of doing business with me.

Auto-responders are also great tools, and there are a number of ways to use them to your advantage.  If they're set up to provide information about specific things, they can be a great time saver.  But when they are used improperly, they can do more harm than good. If I request information and receive an auto-response, fine.  But don't send me the same information once a week for the next seven weeks.  All you are doing is aggravating an otherwise potential customer.

While I'm pretty tolerant about receiving unsolicited email, (spam) I do find it annoying to get the same ad over and over, all sent to a different address at my domain, day after day.  It is pretty obvious that the sender has software to search the web looking for email addresses, and harvesting every one they could find. If you try to respond to their message, it is returned as undeliverable, and in my judgment is not an offer from a legitimate company - another customer lost.

Ever try to get a question answered at Microsoft's web site? They ask you to describe your problem, and then give you an automated answer, which may or may not solve your problem. Efficient - yes, helpful - possibly. Don't get caught up in this trap. Sometimes there is no substitute for interaction with other people.

Yes, the Internet is a vast, impersonal place. But if you are hoping to do business on the web, you have to inject the personal touch.  Personalized email can be a great tool in your bag of tricks.  If you get a question, take a few moments and try to answer it - if you do, you will most likely gain a long term supporter, and if they're a prospect, a customer.

Another thing that many are remiss at, is thanking someone who buys their product, or becomes a customer.  Now if your business produces a lot of orders, it may not be possible to send a personalized thank you note to every customer.  But you can have a "canned" letter hid away in your word processor that you can copy and paste.  A little attention here goes a long way.

Many times you will receive comments or suggestions.  Some may be positive and others could be negative.  You should take the time to personally respond to these.  Thank people for positive comments.  If it is negative try to address the issue, but don't get defensive.  If someone has a gripe, and takes the time to write you, take them seriously.  Maybe they are simply chronic complainers, but maybe their opinion has substance.  Evaluate every comment you get, and surprisingly, you just might find a flaw in your approach that you never thought of, but someone else did.

Tread carefully when someone requests a joint venture.  Many times these are thinly veiled pyramids.  If you sell advertising in your publication or on your website, why would someone be willing to give you a healthy percentage of their profit, in return for your running an ad for them.  Personally, I get offers like this all the time, addressed to "Dear Webmaster" and you know where they wind up.

Once in awhile however, someone will have a legitimate offer, and be willing to trade off a percentage of their profit for your advertising efforts.  But if you do this, remember that you are putting your reputation on the line as well.  Affiliate programs do this all the time.

In the cold world of the Internet, if you expect to do business, you must use a personal approach.  Most people have the same reaction to some of the automated procedures in use that I do, and really appreciate the contact with a live human being.  If you do offer this type of personal service, you will have a real advantage over your competitors, who believe that you can simply automate the process, and watch the money flow in.

In The News

The Intersection Of Technology And Cheating

An expert in the impact of technology on teaching and learning has told the British government that parents and teachers--not technology tools--can effectively address the problem of Internet cheating.

Following a report from the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority that identified widespread cheating, government officials sought advice from Jean Underwood, professor at Nottingham Trent University, about solutions to students' using technology to cheat. Underwood acknowledged that the line between providing appropriate assistance to a student and facilitating cheating is not always clearly defined, and she noted that some technologies can help examiners easily identify instances of plagiarism. But students, she said, will forever be able to find ways to circumvent technology that screens for cheating.

The real solution will be to change student attitudes toward their work, making them understand the value of doing it themselves and genuinely learning the material.

Focus - A Big Internet Marketing Success Secret
by Willie Crawford

FOCUS is the key! Far too many Internet marketers try to do too many projects at once.  They eventually begin to feel overwhelmed, and then never finish most of them.  The feeling of overwhelm actually makes you less efficient...TIRED, and less motivated.

It's critical that you develop the ability to operate almost as if you're wearing "blinders" that don't allow you to see off to the side.  You need to not even think about unrelated things while working on a project.  I do this well partly because I was trained to “compartmentalize” as a military aviator.   At times I had to block everything out of my mind except the task at hand… perhaps navigating through very hazardous terrain.  There are times when if you’re not successful at the task at hand, other things that follow won’t matter as much!

Many of us operate in information overload.  Everyday we get emails, FedEx packages, and phone calls about some product that we just can't miss. You need to learn to say, "Yes - I can miss it!   Until I finish this current project, I simply don't need to take on another."

You need to also acknowledge that if you miss some new course, or tool, that's being really hyped-up, there WILL be another one along tomorrow.  As fast as things change in Internet marketing, that tool that's being hyped-up today is somewhat likely to be outdated in a few months anyway.

Focus is a habit anyone can develop through practice.  You start a project, and pay little attention to things unrelated to that project until it's done.  Now, you get the reward of having finished that project.  That reward could be another income stream on autopilot, or it could be just the joy of crossing it off of your "to do" list. Each time you get one of these rewards, it reinforces the habit patterns that made the reward possible. Eventually, you develop the ability to really focus, and really get more done, without it being a struggle.

Back to your “to do” list.  If having a LONG list just makes you feel more overwhelmed, work from several lists. Have a master list, and then each day pick one or two “must do items” and focus on those.  It will make your task ahead seem much less daunting.

Another habit that will aid you in focusing is learning to delegate and form partnerships.  Since a big part of focusing is getting projects completed, learn to only do those things that you are most suited for.  It's often cheaper to hire someone else to do things that you don't know how to do well.  Having partners adds an accountability factor. Knowing that someone is depending upon you to finish your part of a project will make you stop procrastinating and get it done!

Just as effective as delegating, and often cheaper, is using software to do routine or repetitive tasks.  For your email marketing, use autoresponders for example.  Use software that automates some parts of building or updating your websites. An example of a piece of software I use to build webpages for selling Clickbank products can be seen here: http://TheRealSecrets.com/unfair/ This software allows me to set up pages for over 3400 products in the Clickbank Marketplace in minutes. Tools like this free up vital time for YOU to do things that software really can’t do... like marketing.

While software can't do everything, and I've never seen a business on full-autopilot, software can allow you to do a repetitive job in 1/100th of the time.  Then you can use your remaining work time to really focus on a task you must get done.  Do this, and you'll not only find yourself able to get a LOT more done, you'll find yourself with more free time on your hands.  Try not to use that free time to take on too many new tasks. Get proper rest and recreation too.  It will make you more efficient and make it even easier to focus because your mind will be clearer.

Trivia

The "last meal" for Death Row inmates has became embedded in the American death-penalty ritual. Reporters have dutifully recorded the last meal menus: John Wayne Gacy had fried chicken and strawberries; Ted Bundy passed on steak and eggs; James Smith, executed in Texas in 1990, requested a "lump of dirt" (request was denied); Missouri inmate Lloyd Schlup asked for venison and hare (request was granted).

Market With Phone Calls

Sometimes people forget that a phone call can be just as effective as the Internet or e-mail. There are a few simple guidelines that can make your phone call more productive.

Many people are under a lot of pressure. Make sure when you call you ask if it is a good time to talk. Most will say yes, but it immediately shows you respect their time. Also, depending on how well you know the person, you should target your call. Plan a specific topic you want to talk about. The higher up the ladder the person is in the company, the more targeted your conversation should be.

After you talk with someone, write down the information that you've learned about them. It makes prospects feel important when it appears you remember all about them the next time you call.

Maintaining contact after you have met someone is extremely valuable. Think of different, creative ways to keep in touch. Perhaps you could send them a birthday card, a thank-you note, or call and congratulate them on a special occasion. Every time you make contact, learn something new about them and add it to your record.

These are great ways to build relationships with customers, relationships that keep them coming back and buying more.

A Little Humor to Start the Week

Making Up for Lost Time
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

An airline pilot was scheduled to take a flight from New York to Los Angeles. The weather was too bad in New York to allow his usual on time departure. The weather in New York finally cleared and the pilot asked for his departure clearance. He was very dismayed to hear that he had another delay due to the increased traffic now leaving New York.

Sometime later he finally received his clearance and decided he would try to make up the time lost by asking for a direct route to Los Angeles. Halfway across the country he was told to turn due South. Knowing that this turn would now throw him further behind schedule he inquired, quite agitated, to the controller for the reason of the turn off course. The controller replied that the turn was for noise abatement.

The pilot was infuriated and said to the controller, "Look buddy, I am already way behind schedule with all the delays you guys have given me today. I really don't see how I could be causing a noise problem for pedestrians when I am over 6 miles above the earth!"

The controller answered in a calm voice, "Apparently, Captain, you have never heard two 747's collide!"

Three boys were heading home from school one day when one started the time-honored game of paternal one-upmanship. He said, "My dad's way faster than any of yours, he can throw a 90-mph fast ball from the pitcher's mound and run and catch it just after it crosses the plate!"

One of the other boys said, "Oh yeah? Well, my dad can shoot an arrow from his bow and run to the target and hold it up to make sure the arrow hits the bulls eye!"

The last boy said, "Your dads don't even come close to being faster than mine. My dad works for the government, and even though he works every day until 4:00 he gets home at 3:30!"

A 3rd-grade girl came home from school. She was very happy, and her Mom noticed this. Mom asked, "What makes you so happy today?" The girl said, "Mom, we learned how to make babies in school today!"

Thinking that 3rd grade was a bit early for that, she asked her daughter to tell her how.

"It's easy, Mom -- you just drop the y, and add ies," the daughter said.

My wife was chatting with her brother, a business executive who had retired last year. While discussing the joys of his new leisure time, he remarked that he had been compelled to give up skiing, a sport he had enjoyed for many years.

"Afraid of injuries?" my wife asked.

"Now I am," her brother responded. "Before I could drag a cast into work and still do my job, but now I'd be messing up my golf game."

Riddle

A mother has three sick children. She has a 24-ounce bottle of medicine and needs to give each child eight ounces of the medicine. She is unable to get to the store and has only three clean containers, which measure 5, 11 and 13 ounces. The electricity is out and she has no way of heating water to wash the containers and doesn't want to spread germs. How can she divide the medicine to give each child an equal portion without having any two children drink from the same container?

Do you know the answer? Scroll down to find the solution.

Feedback - Q&A

Hi Bob,

I just enjoyed another interesting issue of your tip of the day publication. Thank you, for a job well done. I've been subscribed to you for years and never disappointed.

Marge in St. John

-----

Marge – when I first visited St. John, I was talking with some friends who are residents there, and I referred to it as St. Johns – I was quickly corrected.

Bob

Answer to Riddle

Fill the 5 oz. and 11 oz. Containers from the 24 oz. container. This leaves 8 oz. in the 24 oz. bottle. Next empty the 11 oz. bottle by pouring the contents into the 13 oz. bottle. Fill the 13 oz. bottle from the 5 oz. container (with 2 oz.) and put the remaining 3 oz. in the 11 oz. bottle. This leaves the 5 oz. container empty. Now pour 5 oz. from the 13 oz. bottle into the 5 oz. bottle leaving 8 oz. in the 13 oz. bottle. Finally pour the 5 oz. bottle contents into the 11 oz. bottle giving 8 oz. in this container.

Something to Think About
By Jan Tincher

Do you get tired when you wish you wouldn't?

Are your shoulders down, your eyelids and head droopy?

What would happen if someone told you there were nice, piping hot donuts in the next room? What would your head do? It would whip up and you'd start sniffing the air, wouldn't you? What about your shoulders and eyelids? On full alert, right?

How about if someone came along and said, *If you finish your work, we'll leave earlier and get to the show on time tonight. My treat!* Didn't your ambition level just rise?

Well, why depend on outside influences? Why not provide your own incentives? How about if you *triggered* yourself so that whenever you feel tired, you suddenly become very ambitious? Wouldn't that feel great?
