Flying Rats
by Bob OsgoodbyNo, we’re not talking about any of the various birds of the widely distributed family Columbidae, characteristically having plump bodies, small heads, and short legs; in other words a pigeon. It is amazing how many meanings have evolved over the years using the word pigeon. There are “Stool Pigeons” and“ Clay Pigeons”. You can be “Pigeon Hearted” or in the work place trapped in a “Pigeon Hole”. Some refer to them as “Flying Rats” because they eat all the seed from bird feeders at the expense of the smaller birds, and foul statues and sidewalks with their droppings, but we’re not talking about that either.
The saying, “A sucker is born every minute,” is said to have originated with PT Barnum of Barnum and Bailey Circus fame, although that is in question. What is true is that there are unscrupulous people who are certain that there is always a new crop of easy marks available that can be counted upon, and seldom fail to respond, to the allurements offered – these are what I refer to as the “Flying Rats.”
What we’re talking about here is the other kind of pigeon – a person who is easily swindled - a chump or an easy mark; a stooge, sucker, or a trusting soul. As computer prices continue to fall, and Internet access becomes available in remote areas, thousands of people are joining the ranks of those who are like lambs willing to be led to the slaughter.
With the ongoing barrage of spam (unsolicited commercial email) arriving daily in our email inboxes, those who are experienced on the Internet, quickly recognize this and relegate it to their trash bin. But those, who are less experienced, may not realize it is a scam and become easy marks. Many have heard about spam, and have selected ISP’s who advertise that they will keep your inbox free of unsolicited email. They then believe that anything that gets past their spam filters must be legitimate – nothing could be further from the truth.
Their ISP is part of the problem. No ISP can effectively eliminate illegal offers or scams. Why, you might ask. Because, simply put, there is no intervention by a human being in identifying what is, or what is not spam. They rely on the computer filters they use to identify mail with keywords they have determined is most likely spam. Now two things happen and both are bad.
The first thing is that their filters will identify a legitimate email as spam and delete it. The recipient never sees it, and the sender doesn’t know they never got it. Secondly, the spammers quickly identify the keywords used and avoid them thereby allowing their mail to get through. Let’s face it – their business is to deliver their advertisers messages, and if they can’t they will be quickly out of business. They have many people designing ad copy that will get through the ISP’s filters.
It has also been reported that there may be instances where an ISP employee, who is responsible for designing their spam filters, is also on the payroll from the spammers who are informed of what to avoid. So what’s a person to do?
First, you must use common sense. Where else (except on the Internet) will you find a deal that will allow you to make “big bucks” with only a “small investment?” Any “opportunity” that you receive by unsolicited email, trash as fast as you can hit the delete key. Next you must use “due diligence” and thoroughly investigate the offer.
Many of the offers you receive are obvious scams, but some ads are written by some very talented people. These are not some “Rubes” from “Hohokem”, but are highly skilled in what they do. Their “job” is to separate you from your hard earned cash and do it very well. If you use common sense however, and exercise due diligence, you can keep those “flying rats” from eating from your bird feeder.

In The News
Dutch To Track All Citizens, Forever
Beginning in 2007, the Dutch Ministry of Health will begin tracking all citizens of the country in a single database from their births to their deaths.
Each person will be added to the database at birth, with health and family information included. As people in the database age, information from schools, doctors, and the police will be added. In an effort to protect privacy, no individual will be permitted to see any person's complete file. Various governmental agencies, however, will be able to add "red flags" to a file if they notice something that might be cause for concern, according to Jan Brouwer, spokesperson for the Health Ministry.
Brouwer suggested that someone at child protection services might find that for an individual, red flags had been added by the police, the school, and a doctor, which would likely indicate a problem that should be addressed. Truancy is often correlated with criminality, for example, and the new database will allow tracking such patterns.
How to Make Your Small Business Idea Work
by Arbeot GeshafeThe first step to a successful small business is coming up with a marketable small business idea. Once you have that idea, you now have to make that idea a reality. The idea and the reality are two very different things! When you come up with your small business ideas, you must realize that that is only the beginning of the process and you will have many hurdles and questions to answer before you can even think about beginning your small business.
An important factor you have to focus on when you come up with small business ideas are your talents and skills that you can bring to the business. Your ideas should also focus on those specific talents and skills that you enjoy doing. If you really hate the heat, bugs and humidity of the outdoors, then starting a landscaping business would not be an appropriate small business idea for you! However, if you love children and enjoy being around them for long periods of time, starting a baby-sitting service, home daycare, or tutoring business my be just the business of your dreams!
Your small business idea should correspond to the demand for a certain service or product in your area. It is important to know what kind of competition you will have to deal with; whether there are many people providing that service or you will be the only one. Also, whether this small business idea has the potential for repeat business, or will your customers be looking to you for one time, specialized service only. If you have a specialized skill that has little competition, you have good chances of success. However, it is better to go in for the small business ideas that support repeat customers.
Here are some questions you need to answer before committing to your small business idea:
1.~Is your small business idea unique? The more competition you have, the harder it will be to break into the tough markets out there today. If you have a service that is not provided by many other providers, you have a better chance of winning customers and keeping them.
- Will you be able to provide quality service from day one? If you cannot, the small business ideas won't work because you can't build your reputation on a low quality product or service.
3.~Do you have the capital to start a small business? Some small businesses, like freelance writing or transcription, can need very little money to start, so long as you have a computer you can use that is reliable. Daycare services may require licensing, insurance and professional training to open in your area, so research is a must! Some businesses, like landscaping businesses, take a lot of money to start. Make sure that fits into your planning before you invest a lot into your small business idea!

Biz-Tips
by Kevin NunleyThe 10-30-60 Marketing Rule
People often want to know how much they should spend on marketing. There is no standard answer, but we do have some good rules of thumb we can use.
The 10-30-60 Marketing Rule says to spend 10 percent of your ad budget on untargeted marketing. Your ads should be aimed at everyone. The idea is to do a broad sweep across the public to find a few people who will become interested prospects.
Spend 30 percent of your budget on interested prospects. This is targeted advertising to specific opt-in lists, postcards to certain people in your industry, and mailings to people who have called or emailed for more information.
Finally, spend 60 percent on current and previous customers. People who have already bought from you are by far the most likely to buy again.
One of the Net's biggest problems right now is there are so many people who are jumping on that it is easy to forget to market to our past customers.

A Little Humor to Start the Week
Good News – Bad News
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=God called down to Moses and said, "I've got good news and bad news. Which do you want first?"
Moses replied, "Most merciful God, if I have brought you any favor, please give me the good news first."
"Moses, the good news is that I've chosen you to deliver my people from bondage," God answered.
"I will force Pharaoh to release my children by causing years of pestilence in Egypt. There will be plagues of locusts and frogs and incredible devastation upon the land. Pharaoh's armies will chase you as you try to leave, but do not fear because I will part the waters of the Red Sea to aid in your escape."
"And the bad news?" Moses inquired.
"You have to prepare the Environmental Impact Statement,"

A gentleman was having some physical problems and his doctor told him that he had to drink warm water with Epsom salts one hour before breakfast. At the end of a week he returned and the doctor asked if he was feeling better. The man said that he actually felt worse.
"Did you drink warm salt water an hour before breakfast each day?" the Doc asked.
"No," replied the man somberly, letting out a sigh. "I could only do about 15 minutes!"
-----
Like all growing boys, my teenage grandson was constantly hungry, I went to the refrigerator to find something he might like. After poking around a bit and moving the milk and juice cartons, I spotted a bowl of leftover chili.
I called out to him excitedly. He came running into the kitchen. "Look! I found some chili."
Struggling to be polite, he said, "If you're that surprised, I'm not really sure I want it."

Dr. Cutter is the local Veterinarian, known for his wry humor. He surpassed himself one summer day when a city dog was brought to him after an encounter with a porcupine.
After almost an hour of prying, pulling, cutting and stitching, he returned the dog to its owner, who asked what she owed.
"Fifteen dollars, Ma'am," he answered.
"Why that's simply outrageous!" she stormed. "That's what's wrong with you Maine people, you're always trying to over charge summer visitors. Whatever do you do in the winter, when we're not being gypped here?"
"Raise porcupines, Ma'am."

How did these "returned" emails stop?Kind regards
Irene Uys-----
Hi Irene - your email wound up in a mailbox I only check once a week, therefore the late response.
When Comcast finally figured out what was going on, they stopped the returned mails emanating from the web site in France.

Something to Think About
By Jan TincherAre you having trouble communicating with people?
Start taking note of different people's specific patterns.
How do they perceive the world? If it isn't the same way you do, analyze it.
Adopt their way of thinking for a moment. See if that helps you understand them better.
