Katrina
by Bob OsgoodbyMy mother taught me never to speak about my religious or political beliefs with strangers, as you never know who you are talking to. Well, lest I'm accused of preaching from a "bully pulpit", I'm not going to here. But I have been watching TV and hearing the "pundits" blaming this one and that one ad naseum, and felt it might be appropriate to make a comment or two. I'm not going to join their ranks, but simply ask a few questions. I may have opinions on the answers but this is not the forum for that.
The first question I have is why were there approximately 2,000 school buses in New Orleans sitting idle (soon to be flooded) when they could have been used to evacuate people who did not have the wherewithal to leave by themselves? Given the advance warning they had, couldn't they have moved those who were willing to go to a safer place? Oh, and wouldn't they have saved those 2,000 vehicles as well that now have to be trashed at taxpayers expense? Ditto for the mass transit buses that also sat idle.
Why are people denigrating the Governor of Louisiana for not sending the National Guard Troops into New Orleans BEFORE the hurricane hit? Are they super heroes, capable of leaping tall buildings at a single bound, more powerful than a locomotive and faster than a speeding bullet? Should they have been sent into harms way when everyone else was being told to leave?
Why are the Feds being castigated for being non-responsive? Doesn't it take some time to mobilize thousands of people, supplies and equipment, and transport them someplace? Should they have known in advance that this was going to be the Hurricane of the Century? Where should they send all this "stuff?" If it jogged to the left, it would have hit Texas, or to the right Florida - should we have sent people, equipment and supplies there as well, just in case?
Is the President, the Head of Homeland Security and the Director of FEMA like Captain Kirk of the Starship Enterprise? Whey didn't they simply say "Beam them there Scotty?"
Why is the Astrodome in Houston fully stocked with relief supplies at all times and the Superdome in New Orleans wasn't, even though New Orleans is in a much more dangerous location and vulnerable to a disaster?
Why did the City of New Orleans jeopardize a half million people who were only protected by antiquated dikes and levees that they knew would fail during a serious storm?
Why did people climb into attics with no means of escape from the attic when the flood waters were rising? The hurricane was over at that point, so why didn't they simply go to higher ground when they saw the rising water, or at least climb onto their roof?
I can understand the looting of stores for food and water, but does a TV set or jewelry constitute a necessity and is that also fair game for the looters?
Why didn't Walmart and other stores who sell guns and ammunition, lockup all of their firearms, that were normally for sale, in a secure place before they evacuated the store?
Why does Fox Broadcasting permit Geraldo Rivera to be seen in public?
Why does it seem that Al Sharpton always turns something into a racial incident? Does he really believe that the reason the Feds didn't act faster was because the majority of the people stranded were African American?
Why did thousands of volunteers, at their own expense, mobilize to help those in need?
Why did our neighbors to the North and South of us wait so long to send some help?
Why are the politicians taking pot shots at the President? Don't all of our elected representatives bear equal responsibility for the purported inaction of the Federal Government, or is the President a handy whipping boy? If one of the last two unsuccessful candidates for President were elected, would they have done a better job, or would the weight of the bureaucracy bogged them down as well?
Are the Red Cross and FEMA "first responder" agencies or is their role to help clean up the mess and help people after the fact. Should they have been forced into harms way into a lawless situation where gangs ruled and the police were powerless to stop the violence.
Are all the "finger pointers" really like "Monday morning Quarterbacks" who can tell with certainty what should have been done after the fact? Should "could have, would have, should have" for those who are anti-establishment and are against anything or anyone they don't like, be their rallying cry, and should we pay attention to them?
And my final question – since a great number of the people who suffered in the Astrodome and living on the highway overpass were on public assistance, was their suffering purposefully prolonged by local officials, in the hope they wouldn’t come back after they were evacuated?
These are just a few of the questions I have. Do I have the answers - No. While I might have opinions, I certainly don't have the answers. If you have some strong feelings, or some answers, send them to me at mailto:bob@adv-marketing.com and, I will post them on our website for all to see.

Katrina Boosts Online Education
Educators at all levels--from elementary through college--are trying to figure out how to accommodate the estimated 200,000 students from the Gulf states who have been displaced by Hurricane Katrina, and some see the circumstances as a prime opportunity for online education to prove its worth.
Advocates of online learning are working to get federal authorities to relax rules governing things ranging from obtaining teacher certification to using public funds to support online schools. The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has committed $1.1 million to the Sloan Consortium, an organization that works to improve the quality of online instruction, to provide space for 10,000 students in its program. A number of online programs for elementary and secondary students are hoping to persuade government officials to allow public funds to be used by displaced students in online programs. Julie Young, chief executive of the Florida Virtual School, one of the nation's largest online public schools, said, "It's going to be an opportunity to show the power of online learning."
Critics said online programs are a poor substitute for in-class learning. Nat LaCour, secretary general of the American Federation of Teachers, said displaced students "need to be in classrooms with teachers who can provide nurturing experiences."
Should Affiliates Really Use Blogging and Pinging To Get Indexed?
by Anik SingalThere seems to be a huge craze lately with everyone trying to blog and ping to get their websites indexed into the search engines. Although this can be a great tool, all marketers should first understand exactly what they’re getting themselves into before starting.
This article is to serve as a beginners guide to getting started with blogging and pinging.
1. What is a blog?
A "blog" is short for "web log." A web log is an online diary or journal. The main aspect blog is that it is frequently updated - at least once a week, sometimes every day or even more.
Since blogs are regularly updated, they tend to carry more value than regular static HTML pages (in some cases).
2. What is a ping?
A ping is a program that sends out a brief request for a response from another computer or server. When you ping on the Internet, you send out a program to see if a remote server is responding.
3. How do bloggers use pings?
Two main reasons to use pings with blogs: First and foremost is to let the search engines know that you have updated your website so they can send their spiders.
Secondly, pings also update the websites on the internet who are using your blog on their site (through a feature called RSS feeds, they are displaying your messages on their site).
4. So what is the big deal about blogging and pinging?
Smart affiliate marketers use blogging and pinging to help get their sites crawled and indexed by the search engine spiders a lot quicker than they normally would.
They set up a blog either on their main site or on a sub-domain of their site. They then post links to their product pages on their blog and send out a ping to all the major servers on the Internet.
That ping says "This site has fresh content, time to go add it to your database!" It's a trigger that sends the search spiders looking for updated pages on your site. When they find the new pages, search engines tend to index them much faster.
Blogging and pinging will not get you into EVERY search engine overnight. As of this writing, it is most effective with getting into Yahoo. But often MSN, and even Google, will follow in short order.
Combine blogging and pinging with good link recruiting for the best indexing.
Also, blog and ping on a regular basis if you want to “stay” indexed in the search engines.
6. Is blogging and pinging a requirement to get indexed?
No. You can get indexed quickly by getting plenty of natural backlinks. But for backlinks to be most effective, they have to appear as if they were natural and this can take weeks if not months. Blogging and pinging does seem to drastically shorten the process.
7. Is there a downside to blogging and pinging?
Yes, some marketers are starting to abuse this strategy and the engines are getting wise to it! If you go over-board you risk getting your website completely banned and removed.
Also, many marketers are blogging and pinging for a few days and then forgetting about the website your website will likely be de-indexed if you do not continue to naturally blog and ping.
The bottom line is that blogging and pinging is a great strategy right now to help you get your website indexed faster. However, the old natural way of getting incoming links is still the best and most assured way not to mention the long-term benefits of having incoming links.
If you have not yet started blogging and pinging, I suggest you start with a practice website first, not your main website.

Biz-Tips
by Kevin NunleyA Few Tips For Good Telephone Selling
Do you have to convince customers, bosses, or employees via the telephone? Ready or not, you're in telephone sales. Even with all the enthusiasm about the Internet, most business still revolves around the phone.
Here are some quick tips for making your point more powerful.
Talk clearly. Use short sentences. Talk loud enough but don't over-modulate the mouthpiece (that's announcer talk for distortion). This can be especially tricky when you're on the cell phone in the car.
I learned a trick from a former newspaper reporter. "When you're talking with a reporter and you want them to write down particular points but not others, vary your pace. Talk fast through the points you don't feel are important, but slow down and enunciate the important parts you want in print." The same works for selling on the telephone.
Leave the script behind. Instead, jot down a few phrases that remind you of your important points. Ad-lib around these to keep your pitch on track.

A Little Humor to Start the Week
Cafeteria Food
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=When the power went off at the elementary school, the cook couldn't serve a hot meal in the cafeteria. She had to feed the children something, so at the last minute she whipped up great stacks of peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches.
As one little boy filled his plate, he said, "It's about time. At last -- a home cooked meal!"

In my job with a delivery company, I was getting directions to a customer's home.
The woman very specifically said, "From the main road in the center of town go two lights. Look for the post office. Turn left onto the next street. Go 1.3 miles. Drive past a red hydrant and then take the next right. Go 50 yards. My driveway is the second on the right, and the number is on the mailbox.
As I entered the information into the computer, I asked, "What color is your house?"
The woman paused a second, then said, "Hold on. I'll go check."

A new employee calls the Help Desk to complain that there's something wrong with her password. No, it's not the usual caps-lock problem.
"The problem is that whenever I type the password, it just shows stars," she says.
"Those asterisks are to protect you," the Help Desk technician explains, "so if someone were standing behind you, they wouldn't be able to read your password."
"Yeah," she says, "but they show up even when there is no one standing behind me."

The minister gave his Sunday morning service, as usual, but this particular Sunday, it was considerably longer than normal.
Later, at the door, shaking hands with parishioners as they moved out, one man said, "Your sermon, Pastor, was simply wonderful - so invigorating and inspiring and refreshing."
The minister of course, broke out in a big smile, only to hear the man add, "Why I felt like a new man when I woke up!"

Feedback - Q&A
Hello Bob,
I live in south Texas and my question is; why aren't they treating the water before they release it into the Mississippi? Now the seafood industry is going to be destroyed for many years, coastal tourism going to lose millions.
I live on the coast, and there is no way that I will allow my family to swim at the beach or in the gulf. Plus since my girls father owns a seafood shop, his business is going to be solely from shrimp and crawfish, and fish farms. That is if he and others can survive. Oysters pick up E-coli like nobodies business, the Texas Parks and Wildlife shut down the bays on a regular basis if the bacteria count is too high. I guarantee it will be too high. This mess is far from over.
I am not blaming anyone, but all parties involved for lack of forethought. And if they say, we couldn't treat the water, I say yes you can. Use the chemicals that are for pools. If we Americans can get in millions of donations of dollars and needed items then we can come up with enough super-shock to clean up some of the toxicity levels we are pouring into the Gulf of Mexico. Enough said!
Sandy C, South Texas.-----
Sandy – many people are not looking past the immediate problem of de-watering the city. I was horrified when I saw that column of brown toxic waste water being pumped into Lake Pontchartrain. The Lake is a natural habitat for Manatee and other wildlife, and the ecology there will be forever scarred.
As the rain-swollen lake begins to drain into the Gulf of Mexico, surrounding wetlands and Mississippi River, the economic problems could be devastating to those far outside the path of destruction of the storm.

They can all be flipped and still be the same.
Something to Think About
By Jan TincherLove is the polarity of fear.
Every time you experience fear, ask yourself: "What is going on that I have substituted fear for love at this Moment?"
Fear is a current of energy that runs through your body and is produced when you feel cut off from the source of all unconditional love.
Make it a habit of not cutting yourself off from God.
He NEVER cuts himself off from you.
