Cooling Off
by Bob Osgoodby

Those with a "brick and mortar" business, quickly learn that there are two types of people they will meet in their store. Those who can afford to pay for the goods and services, and those who can't. Now that seems simple enough.

Someone who leaves the store without buying, because they couldn't pay now, will seldom be seen again. Sure, some go to an ATM, withdraw the cash and return, but they are the exception rather than the rule. Others will write a check, but there are people who can't afford, at this moment, to write a check either. If you can't close a sale when they are ready to buy, they have time to cool off, and you will most likely lose the opportunity.

The same holds true on the web. If you can't close when someone has made up their mind to buy, you will probably lose the sale. Now there are several methods of accepting payment on the web. One is to have them send you a check or money order. They have to write out the check or get a money order, and time passes - in other words you have lost the immediacy of the moment.

Many people buy on impulse, and if you provide a convenient way for them to pay for the purchase, you have a better chance of making the sale. This can take several forms on the web, and let's talk about just two.

Many online business barely make expenses when starting out. As you get known, it will increase, but after awhile will level out. You are losing the impulse purchases. Once you install online checks, your business should immediately increase.

Obviously the online check submission has an effect. But, you can then expect your business to level off again, even though it will be at a higher level than before. Realize that people will not submit a check online if they are tight on funds.

Some people will write a check or submit one online knowing they don't have sufficient funds to cover it. Yes this is illegal, but there are those who will do it, hoping to get the merchandise. Those that do are fairly comfortable in the fact that it is usually not worth the merchants time and effort to prosecute, and they will simply write it off as a bad debt.

It is then time to take the next step. Acquire merchant status and be able to accept credit cards. People can now make the purchase knowing they have 30 days to make payment. If they were financially tight at that point, they could make a minimum payment, but still have the advantage of making their purchase now. At that point, your business should take a huge jump.

If you are doing business on the web, and selling either a product or a service, and feel you just can't afford to get a merchant account, it is costing you lost sales. Sure, it costs about a 700 - 800 dollars to become fully operational with online checks and a merchant account, but you will recover that very quickly.

But I have to have a "secure site" to accept these you might think, and you are right. You can do this in one of two ways that make sense. You can contract with a company that provides web space and get a "secure site" from them, but this requires a knowledge of HTML coding. You also have to manually enter the credit card information, and you have little defense against a disputed claim, and may have "charge backs".

A second way is to set up a shopping cart. This is probably the best way to do business online. You don't need a secure site of your own as the company providing the shopping cart does. An added benefit is that the customers enter the information themselves and their "IP" address is automatically captured. If the credit card is declined, they can immediately enter another. You are only notified when there is a successful transaction. The customer is automatically sent a receipt, so the chances of a charge back are significantly reduced.

If you don't have merchant status, you should at least consider "Paypal" which is probably the easiest and cheapest way for small businesses and websites to accept payments online. There is also a shopping cart available, but does require basic knowledge of HTML. "Paypal" is a viable solution for a small business.

There are many ways to do business on the web and if you don’t let your potential customers “cool off”, you have a good shot at getting their business.

In The News

Britain To Track, Control Terrorist Web Sites

Following recent terrorist attacks on London's public transit system, the British government announced plans to tighten oversight on people who run Web sites inciting terrorism.

In speaking to Parliament on July 20, Home Secretary Charles Clarke acknowledged that the government would have to "tread carefully" around free speech in instituting changes to the national security policies. Clarke said he intends to draw up a list of unacceptable behaviors, such as preaching, running Web sites, or writing articles intended to provoke terrorism. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office and intelligence agencies will be instructed to build a database of people who provoke terrorism.

Immigration officers will have access to the database, and the government is planning changes to the law to make it easier to deport religious extremists whose behaviors meet the revised policies.

Is RSS Here To Stay Or Gone Tomorrow?
by Kent Thompson

RSS is exploding!  We have seen it everywhere, from basic blogsites to major news websites.  If you haven't heard of RSS before, that's okay, because I hadn't either until a few months ago!

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, or whatever you want it to stand for.  I have seen it also stand for RDF Site Summary, but it really doesn't matter.  What's important is what it does.

Here's how RSS works:

Every site that has constantly changing content has one big problem:  How do you notify your visitors when you've posted new content without them having to scour your entire site every 30 mins?  You could send them an email, but that has several drawbacks.

First, you might not get your messages through the spam filters.  Filters are snatching more and more messages, and just to keep up anymore you have to run all your content through spam-rating systems just to find the likelyhood of it getting blocked.  What a pain!

Second, people can be reluctant to give out their closely guarded email address.  I just talked to a friend of mine that said she signed up for some newsletter recently, and then started receiving all sorts of spam from other companies.  This sort of thing is very common.  How can your visitors trust you if they just clicked to your site?  You could be an underground spam operation for all they know.

This is where RSS steps in and solves all these problems!

Instead of sending an email, you can have your website generate what's called an RSS Feed.  An RSS Feed is nothing more than a webpage with a bunch of summaries of the new content on it.  Next time you see that little orange icon with XML or RSS, click on it and you'll see what I mean.  The summaries are formatted in such a way that an RSS Reader can sort them out and display them neatly.

There are tons of free RSS Readers now, so if you don't have one, do a simple Google search for RSS Reader and you should have no trouble finding one.

All the visitor has to do is copy the little orange RSS icon link and paste it into their RSS Reader program.  The RSS program will periodically download the RSS webpage and will display the new headlines much like your email program will display your subject lines.

If you like one of the headlines, you can click on it and it will display a short description and a link to the entire article.  If you want to read more, click the link and it will display the actual full article on the website.

Here's why this is so handy:

You can now be notified of the new content or headlines posted to all your favorite websites without having to do very much work!   Imagine putting twenty RSS Feeds into your reader and having it download all the content in a matter of seconds instead of having to surf to each site individually!

If you ask me, RSS is here to stay.  All the major sites support it like CNN, ESPN, Yahoo and Google, so that surely is a good sign!  So go on and fire up Google and get yourself an RSS Reader.  You will be glad you did...I sure was!

Trivia

Alfred Hitchcock always managed to make a brief appearance in his films. However, for Lifeboat (1944), he was faced with a difficult problem - the entire movie was set in a lifeboat out at sea, and there were only a few characters in the boat. His ingenious solution was to place a photograph of himself in a newspaper one of the characters reads during the course of the film. He can be seen in the "before" portion of a before and after ad for a diet product.

Tips For Telephone Selling

The Internet revolution has only increased the need for telephone marketing. Many of the largest e-commerce sites ask for your phone number, then have a room of expert telephone sales reps call you for the big pitch.

Why? Telephone selling works. Here are some simple tips that will boost your effectiveness on the phone.

**Try to go directly to the person who can authorize a purchase for your product or service.

**When you get the decision maker on the line, jump into a concise statement of the main benefit you can bring her. "We have a new process that can save you 20% on production costs."

**Prospects appreciate courtesy. Begin by asking if it is a good time to talk. If not, ask the prospect when you can call back. Have several dates and times ready for suggestion.

**Jot down a few notes before making your call, then use your talking points to keep your pitch on track. Take a few notes immediately after the call so you can remember exactly what was said when it comes time to call again.

**Don't wait too long to ask for the sale.

**Offer to send more information via mail, email, or direct them to your website.

A Little Humor to Start the Week

Lawyer Fees
=-=-=-=-=-=

A lawyer had successfully handled a difficult law case for a wealthy friend. Following the happy outcome of the case, the friend and client called on the lawyer, expressed his appreciation of his work and handed him a handsome Moroccan leather wallet.

The lawyer looked at the wallet in astonishment and handed it back with a sharp reminder that a wallet could not possible compensate him for his services. "My fee for that work, " acidly snapped the attorney, "is five hundred dollars." The client opened the wallet, removed a one-thousand dollar bill, replaced it with a five-hundred dollar bill and handed it back to the lawyer with a smile.

Shirley and Abe, a retired couple from New York City, living in Miami, are getting ready to go out to dinner.  Shirley says, "Abe, darling, do you want me to wear this Channel suit or the Gucci?"

Abe says, "Do I care?"

A few minutes later Shirley says, "Abe, should I wear my Cartier watch or my Rolex?"

Abe says, "Who cares?"

A few more minutes pass and Shirley says, "Abe, love, shall I wear my five-carat pear diamond ring or my six-carat round diamond ring with the baguettes?"

Abe says, "Shirley, I really don't care what you wear, but if you don't move your butt, we're going to miss the Early Bird Special at McDonalds.

Five years after my wife and I were married, we received our final wedding gift -- an ice-cream maker. In an attempt to cover procrastination with humor, the friend who sent it included a note: "I wanted to make sure the marriage would last."

She wasn't amused, but did think the present deserved a thank-you note anyway, which she dutifully sent five years later. Her note read: "I wanted to be sure the ice-cream maker would last."

When my mother was called for jury duty, she felt confident of her ability to answer the questions asked of prospective jurors.

As a young attorney, I had filled her in on what to expect.

Asked about the occupations of family members, Mom answered, "My son is a lawyer."

As a follow-up, she was asked if she had ever used the services of an attorney.

"Only to mow my lawn."

Feedback - Q&A

Hi Bob!

I am looking for a good newsletter advertising source and have settled on "Tip of the Day" and "The Internet Tip of the Week" --  This will be an ongoing ad campaign I will order 52 editions at a time. Just want to clarify a couple of things before placing my order.

Tip of the Day - Ad Published daily, ads appear once a week. So if I order 52 weeks, that means my ad will appear once a week for 52 "consecutive" weeks?

2. Internet Tip of the Week - If I order 52 weeks, my ad might not get published in some weeks? Or, can I expect 52 consecutive weeks?

That's all I need to know to get started. I am looking for a solid consecutive weekly schedule.
