Find Your Niche
by Bob OsgoodbyIs everyone who tries to do business on the Web, doomed to failure?
People who invested little or nothing and received the same in return may be. They joined AOL, and immediately found their mailbox was overflowing with spam (junk email). They read some of the mail and, and believing what they read, bought into a program for $20. They sat back and waited, and waited, and waited and nothing happened.
Losing heart, they quit the program and dropped AOL after the free trial period. They now send their email to Aunt Martha, using a free ISP, which is all they really wanted to do in the first place.
Some of these people believed many of the offers that wound up in their mailbox, and bought into a few. They then started their free advertising campaign. When that didn't pay off, they started investing in paid advertising. Here a banner, there a banner, everywhere a banner, banner - they quickly learned the reality of banner ads. But with no long term commitment, they folded their tents, cut their losses, and disappeared into the night.
The tenacious ones failed at level one and two, but believed the hype and invested in an online store. They're like the guy who rented a huge vacant brick and mortar building, and then started to think about what he was going to sell. After an awful lot of work and many bucks later, they found out that just having a store isn't the key to success on the Internet.
So what's the scoop? Is everyone doomed to failure?
Of course not - there are a lot of people making money on the web. But you have to find your "niche". Unless you have very "deep pockets", like anything, you have to know what you are doing.
If your area of expertise is ornithology, why not consider a web site for bird watchers. With some timely articles that are updated on a regular basis, and a store where you sell items of interest, you just might attract a following.
Does that mean you immediately commit to a store and get a merchant account so your customers can pay for their orders - NO. Start your web site, and advertise it heavily. One of the better bets is ezines and newsletters that target the audience you wish to reach. Try to build a following on your website - consider your own newsletter.
If you are able to get a respectable number of visitors to your web site, or subscribers to your newsletter, you just might have a shot at your online store succeeding. Remember, "Content is King". If you provide good content, you will have return visitors. Return visitors are potential future customers.
Offer freebies, run contests, have guest columnists contribute; these all enhance your site. But forget some of the hype you will run across. This does not happen overnight. Once established, will you make money while you sleep - you betcha.
Like any business, you will need a war chest. How much? If you're going to be selling a product, you'll need an inventory. But don't be like the person who bought into Equinox (see http://www.mlmwatch.org/06FTC/Equinox/equinoxftc1.html) who has $5,000 worth of junk in their garage they can't give away.
Look for a distributor who will sell in small lots. Sure they will charge a bit more, and you will earn a bit less, but you're not in over your head. If the product moves, you can then afford to buy larger lots at a lower price.
You should then know pretty quickly if it is going to work. If it is positive at that point, move to your next level. Open your online store, get merchant status so you can accept credit cards, and move forward.
Above all, use "due diligence" in any venture you take, and if you find your niche, you just might not be "Doomed to Failure".

Author Of Sasser Worm Confesses
Prosecutors in Germany have announced that Sven Jaschan, on trial for writing the Sasser computer worm, this week confessed to all charges against him.
Regarded as possibly the most damaging computer worm ever released, Sasser and its several versions are blamed for crashing as many as one million computers around the world, affecting home users and companies including the European Commission and Goldman Sachs. Jaschan, who is 19 now and was a minor when he committed some of his crimes, had previously admitted to writing the worm; this week, he also confessed to data manipulation, computer sabotage, and interfering with public corporations.
He faces up to five years in prison and paying restitution to those affected by Sasser. Monetary damages from the worm have only reached about $150,000, but that number could easily rise into the millions if all those affected reported the damage.

Shopping for Fun and Profit
by Tricia AchadoThere's no getting around it: Everyone has to go shopping sometime whether they like it or not. So if you're going to have to do it, you might as well do it smart.
First of all you need to have a budget or price range in mind to keep from wasting your time with stuff you're not going to buy anyway. It also helps to know what particular designs or brands you're interested in.
Ways of Shopping
There are actually a few different ways of shopping and there are many various places to shop. One thing that is very popular today is online shopping. People can shop for literally anything online. You can even get groceries, beauty products and skin care items online as wall as clothing, books and entertainment items. Everything you use on a daily basis can now be found on the web.
If you have kids you may be surprised at what you can buy online for them. Clothes for children, school items are easily to get from net shops. Everything you need can be found online. You can get from stores important things for your life like new cars, new technologies and new places to live.
Shopping seems to be a common issue for each buyer. Before going to shop people need to know a lot of things that may help them protect their budget. There are some tips and advices that can help you to make from shopping a way of life.
The Money Part
There are also many different ways of paying for the items that you shop for now. You can of course, pay with cash. Cash is a common way to pay for items but paying with checks is slowly going out of style. More and more stores and businesses are getting wary about checks and most places will not let you write a check if the address is from out of town or out of state. You typically can not use out of state checks or two-party checks.
Another popular way to shop that most people prefer is through check and credit cards. Basically, you have a credit card or a debit card and when you get the items you want, you scan your card or slide it through a slot and then it is deducted from your bank account or charged to your credit card bill.
Save time in the check out line by using a card instead of a check, and get the added benefits of convenience, safety, and a record of purchases. Using cash is the slowest way, and I advise you to avoid this.

Trivia
"Doubleheader," which refers to two baseball games played back to back, was originally a railroad term that referred to two engines in a switching yard hooked up back to back on a single train. The train could also be called a "two-header."

Biz-Tips
by Kevin NunleyReplace Your Business Card With a One Sheet
The problem with business cards is they generally don't give enough information about your business. They only have room for your most basic contact info and maybe a slogan line about what you do.
A business card can't list your hottest services, your latest products, your upcoming bargains, or your philosophy on customer service.
These are often the factors that turn a meeting into a sale. Instead of handing out cards (or in ADDITION to handing out cards), pass out a one sheet. This is exactly what it sounds like, a single sheet of 8x11 paper printed on one or both sides listing all the benefits I mentioned above.
Start your one sheet off with a headline at the top touting your most impressive and popular benefit. What is it you provide that customers almost always go for? Next include a sub heading that explains your business a little more.
Follow that with a graphic (your photo, a picture of your building, etc.) and a pack of bulleted features/benefits. Also include testimonials from satisfied customers or recognized experts in your field.

A Little Humor to Start the Week
PTA Talk
=-=-=-=-=-=As a traffic safety consultant, I often gave talks on accident prevention. One night after I spoke to a PTA group, the program chairperson thanked me profusely and gave me a check for fifty dollars.
"Giving these presentations is a part of my job," I said. "Could I donate the money to one of your causes?"
"That would be wonderful!" she gushed. "We have just the program that could use it. We're trying to raise money so we can afford better speakers.""
-----
At my grandparent's 50th wedding anniversary, I was looking through a photo album of their marriage ceremony. "Grandma, so many of these styles have come back over the years," I commented.
Grandma never hesitated. "That's why I've kept Grandpa all this time," she said. "I know he'll be back in style again one of these days."
-----
At a dinner party, several of the guests were arguing whether men or women were more trustworthy. "No woman," said one man, scornfully, "can keep a secret."
"I don't know about that," answered a woman guest. "I have kept my age a secret since I was twenty-one."
"You'll let it out some day," the man insisted.
"I hardly think so!" responded the lady. "When a woman has kept a secret for twenty-seven years, she can keep it forever."
-----
There were two evil brothers. They were rich, and used their money to keep their evil ways from the public eye. They even attended the same church, and appeared to be perfect Christians.
Then, their pastor retired, and a new one was hired. Not only could the new pastor see right through the brothers' deception, but he also spoke well and true, and the church membership grew in numbers. A fund-raising campaign was started to build a new assembly.
All of a sudden, one of the brothers died. The remaining brother sought out the new pastor the day before the funeral and handed him a check for the amount needed to finish paying for the new building.
"I have only one condition," he said. "At the funeral, you must say my brother was a saint." The pastor gave his word, and deposited the check.
The next day, at the funeral, the pastor did not hold back. "He was an evil man," he said. "He cheated on his wife and abused his family." After going on like this, he finally concluded, "but, compared to his brother, he was a saint."
