What a Waste
by Bob Osgoodby

It never ceases to amaze me. People join a program in the hope of making some extra money, and just don’t seem to do anything right. Now, think about it.

They join an opportunity program, have to plunk down some of their hard earned money and don’t advertise it – what do they expect – the world to beat a path to their door. If they do advertise, they use the same tired old ad that others in the same program use. What makes them think they will come to them instead of one of the thousands of others using the same ad? They submit this ad to free ad publications or web sites, wonder why they don’t have to buy a wheelbarrow to carry the orders in from their mailbox, and lose heart.

Now don’t get me wrong – free ads DO work. But you must have an ad that stands out from the crowd. I just can’t believe that someone, who is trying to capitalize on a free ad, doesn’t take the time to develop a good ad. If you are placing an ad in a publication, and you are sending prospects to a web site, you must ensure that the URL (address) of the web site is displayed correctly.

For example, use http://www.adv-marketing.com - not just www.adv-marketing.com – in the first instance the ad will display as a clickable link, and in many email readers, the second instance won’t. If you are using a mailing address use mailto:bob@adv-marketing.com and not just bob@adv-markeing.com – again the first is clickable and the second is not.

If you are placing an ad for submission on a web site – follow the directions. The majority of people who submit an ad to our site don’t – guess what – their ad is lost in the gaggle of other ads submitted.  If however they do, their ad will have bold headlines and clickable links and will stand out from the others.

Let’s face it – people are lazy – if they can directly click on a link, the odds are they will – if you make them jump through hoops – the odds are they won’t. More work for you – sure – but you are the one trying to make a buck.  If you’re lazy as well – you won’t.

And for goodness sake – test your ad – make sure the URL is correct and your email address is as well.  I just can’t believe the number of ads submitted with incorrect information.

Here’s one I get a real kick out of – because of all the spam they get, they decide to protect themselves, and subscribe to a spam filter such as “Spam Arrest”. These “protection” programs require you to visit a web site and verify that you are a “real person”.  Well guess what gang? Most people can’t be bothered and you will not get their business.

It is a proven maxim that people seldom buy on their first exposure to an ad. Repetition here is key.  If you are going to advertise, you must be in their face on an ongoing basis. An occasional ad here or there simply doesn’t work.

On our web ads, we require that someone renews their ad each week – why, you might ask. Why don’t you just leave the ad there indefinitely?  The answer to that is simple. If an ad is renewed each week, they are still in business. Isn’t it frustrating to do a web search and find that the web site no longer exists.

If someone takes a moment or two to renew their ad, it does build a level of trust with people looking for your product or service. If they see the same ad week after week, they just may choose to look further.

Are some people lazy – you bet! Are some people stupid – most likely! Are some people just inexperienced in the intricacies of the web – no doubt. But all of these people have something in common – they have disposable income. If you don’t make it easy for them, you are simply wasting your time, and they will dispose of it someplace else.

In The News

U.S. Will Keep Control of Internet Root

Despite previous statements from U.S. officials that the country would cede its control over the Internet to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, a set of principles outlined this week by the Bush administration states that no such transfer of control will take place.

The United States maintains control of the "root" system that determines which domains will function, including not just generic domains such as .com and .org but also country-specific domains. The principles, which were announced unexpectedly at a conference in Washington, D.C., are seen by many as a snub of the world community in general and of certain of its critics in particular.

Pakistan and Brazil, for example, have long complained that the United States has too much control over the Internet and should give the world's poorer countries the opportunity to be equal participants.

How Important Is Your Marketing?
by Charlie Cook

Bob called last week from Phoenix, Arizona with some stunning news about his web site. He first contacted me in the fall of 2003. He had a web site that was helping him generate a healthy income but he sensed he could be doing even better. He wanted to get more visitors to his web site and get more of them to contact him about his retail liquidation services.

Are you interested in getting more prospects to your web site and prompting more of them to contact you?

Over the two months I worked with Bob to help him clearly define his target market, identify the problem he solves, and clarify his marketing message. We improved the copy on his web site and the structure of his web pages to prompt more people to contact him. I showed him how to write articles and use them to generate a steady stream of visitors to his site.

Bob was happy with the results of these changes, but I wasn't. He was getting more visitors to his site and more inquiries, but I thought there was potential for even more growth. I knew that Bob could be doing better if he would just change his marketing message. Despite my best efforts to persuade, cajole and prompt him to rethink how he talked about what he did, Bob was happy with his existing marketing message.

Prior to working with me, Bob had spent ten years regularly experimenting with his marketing message and had found a sentence that generated the best response he'd ever had. It was working; he was keeping busy, making money and didn't want to mess with success.

We finished our work together almost a year ago, so I was surprised when Bob called last week. It turns out that he hadn't stopped experimenting. He had taken my advice to heart after all and been fine-tuning his marketing message so that it described the problem he solves for his clients clearly and concisely.
With this new marketing message at the top of his web page, Bob is getting 3 times the number of inquiries about his services. That's 300% more people who know the problem he solves and who are contacting him about his services.

How much more could you be making if you had 3 times as many people contact you about your products and services?

When your prospects are considering a purchase, they are looking to solve a problem. They might want to eliminate back pain, fund their child's college tuition, sell off their excess inventory quickly so they have more operating cash on hand, as in Bob's case. In every case your prospect has a problem or need that prompted their purchase.

Your prospects are hoping you can help them. They're hoping you have the solution to making them happier, smarter and richer. They are buying the result you provide.

When a prospect meets you or visits your web site, the first item they should see is a statement of the problem you solve. Your prospects then immediately know whether you can help them.

Why is your marketing message - your elevator speech - and the way you talk about what you do so important?

At ten to twelve words long, your marketing message won't cover all the problems you solve, establish your credibility or the value you provide. But if the first thing you say to a prospect doesn't get their attention, they won't stay at your web site, read the rest of your marketing materials or listen to the rest of what you have to say.

Bob spent over a decade experimenting to find a marketing message that helped him generate a steady income and then in a few months discovered he could improve on it by three hundred percent. Don't wait ten years to do the same with your marketing. Write, test and use a problem solving marketing message and more people will contact you about your products and services.

Biz-Tips
by Kevin Nunley

Convert Business Language into People Language

Jargon tends to creep into our language no matter what business we're in. When I meet with teachers at my kid's parent conference, they use a lot of terms and codes I don't understand.

We tend to do the same thing in business. A letter or email to a customer can use business-speak phrases like "in our considered opinion" and "enclosed please find." Simplify these into everyday language: "we think" and "here is."

Often we use jargon and complex phrases in an effort to seem smart, serious, professional, or give our ideas more weight. While that may be a smart thing to do when communicating with other workers in your field, customers react best to straight, plain talk.

After you write something, try to speak the same ideas. If you are saying something you wouldn't say in normal spoken conversation, change it to sound more natural.

This ability to put even complex ideas into everyday language is the hallmark of many successful politicians. They know their careers depend on helping voters connect with their ideas.

A Little Humor to Start the Week

Measure It
=-=-=-=-=-=

Our mom needed a new mattress for her antique bed, so my brother and I decided to buy her one as a gift. The problem was we weren't sure what to get, because the bed was an odd size. Fortunately, my brother happened to be visiting my mother one day when I called home.

"Measure the bed frame before you leave," I told him.

"I don't have a tape measure."

"You can use a dollar bill," I suggested, "each one is six inches long."

"Can't," he replied after digging through his wallet, "I only have a ten."

Judge: Is there any reason you could not serve as a juror in this case?

Juror: I don't want to be away from my job that long.

Judge: Can't they do without you at work?

Juror: Yes, but I don't want them to know it.

-----

An important and very well publicized murder trial was soon to begin. In preparation for the trial, the tiresome jury selection process took place, each side hotly contesting and dismissing potential jurors.

One prospective juror, Dan O'Keefe, was called for his question session.

He was asked, "Property holder?"

Dan replied, "Yes, I am, Your Honor."

Then he was asked, "Married or single?"

Dan responded, "Married for twenty years, Your Honor."

Then the judge asked, "Formed or expressed an opinion?"

Dan stated with certainty, "Not in twenty years, Your Honor."

Feedback - Q&A

Hi Bob

Quick note here: for a while I wasn't able to access the free ad page and had to send my copy via E-mail. That problem has been fixed and everything is back to normal.

Love your Newsletter, your Web Site and all the professionalism you've shown over the three years I've been involved.

Keep up the good work.

Sincerely,
Ted Tillotson
http://www.casinobernardo.com

-----

Hi Ted – Glad you got your problem resolved. I checked my archives and yes, you have been using the free ads for about 3 years. A number of people are regulars like yourself.

Dr. Rae Baum <http://yourstressmatters.com> however holds the record. She has posted 147 ads in the past 3 years. Now figure 156 weeks in 3 years, and for one reason or another, I do skip a week here and there due to various reasons where I let the ad run for an extra week without being renewed, she has had her ad up continuously.  Dr. Baum has actually been using the free ads for approximately 8 years, but my current records only go back 3 years.

Husband and Wife

Something to Think About
By Jan Tincher

Do you have beliefs that don't serve you anymore?

Figure out what your beliefs are and ask yourself these Questions:

Is there anything about this belief that is good? Why do I believe this? If I let go of this belief, what will happen? What will happen to me, my loved ones, my friends, my associates?

Now, if this belief isn't helping you, ask this question: What belief do I want in place of it?

Once you've figured out what you want your new belief to be, reinforce it by visualizing the benefits it will yield. Rejoice in your new belief.
