Words Sell
by Bob Osgoodby

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words.  While this may be true if the picture is a schematic of a complicated gizmo you're trying to put together, it is hardly the case when it comes to your ads.

An image should be used as an attention getter. It should draw people in to read the words used in the ad. Words sell - not pictures.  Each word used in the ad should lead the person to the desired outcome.  In the case of a classified ad, the desired outcome should be to have them request more information.

Sales are seldom made from the first ad someone sees describing your product, service or opportunity.  If you can get someone to ask for more information, your ad has done the first part of the job.

Anyone involved in Internet Sales without a web page is simply spinning their wheels.  Many of the web pages however are disaster areas.  People get so creative in their design, they forget their primary purpose.  Once you have gotten someone to this point, it is now time to close the sale, and this is where many people "miss the boat".

Think about it - your ad had to have been effective as it got them to your web site.  They are looking for additional information.  Some people want the presentation in the quickest possible fashion, while others are willing to spend the time researching your offer.  To be effective you should try to accommodate both groups.

An effective presentation will provide a synopsis of what you want to cover.  It should also have a "link" where a person can be sent for in depth information.  This is definitely a case where more is better.  But you should not use words simply to fill space - they should all be carefully crafted to bring the person to your order page.

Studies have shown that one large web page with internal links to additional information will rank better with the search engines. Think of these internal links as bookmarks within your page, which will quickly advance someone to the desired spot.

An image will make your page more attractive, but don't include one unless it has a purpose, and will help close the sale.  A large image that takes a long time to load will many times have the reverse effect of what is desired.  If the visitor simply "clicks away" from your web page because the image loads slowly, it is defeating its purpose.

Some guru's recommend power words like "free" or "earn without work", but these terms have been overused.  While power words may still have a place in your "teaser" ads, you should use down to earth language at your web site. The words must be vibrant and alive, driving the person toward the desired outcome.

You must learn how to write persuasive words specifically written for your targeted customer. If your target market is professionals, write your message geared to them. Remember however that the vocabulary of many potential customers may be limited, so don't use words that will not be understood by the average person. Avoid the use of terms that will not be known by your prospects.

Your text should be written in a black, legible font with a light background, preferably white.  While yellow text on a black background is "cute" you should avoid using fancy fonts or backgrounds that are difficult to read - people will simply "click away".

Remember - every word you use should have one specific purpose, and that is to lead your prospect to buy you are selling . When writing sales copy, use words like "you" and "your" - write as if you are speaking with just one person -- one on one.

Finally, be aware that many Internet users are apprehensive about making a purchase on the Internet. You must put your potential customers mind at ease by displaying your full name, company name and contact information. This will put their mind at ease by building their confidence in you and your product. While a picture may be worth a thousand words, it is the words that will sell.

In The News

FTC Fighting Zombies

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will appeal to 3,000 Internet service providers (ISPs) worldwide to help identify and cut off service to hijacked computers.

Such "zombies," as they are commonly called, are used by spammers to send millions of unsolicited e-mails. By some accounts, zombie machines send 50 to 80 percent of all spam. Though not requirements, the FTC's recommendations include monitoring subscriber accounts for large amounts of e-mail coming from a particular machine and helping those customers with hijacked computers clean their systems.

The FTC said that 25 other countries are participating in the effort, though China--the country believed to be the source of a large percentage of the world's spam--is not one of them. Dave McClure, president of the U.S. Internet Industry Association, said that most U.S. ISPs already do most or all of the things recommended by the FTC. He noted that ISPs are forbidden by law from reading subscriber e-mails, saying that it can be difficult to distinguish between "spam coming across your network and your local charitable organization sending out its monthly newsletter."

The Easiest Way to Hit a Goal Is to Give Yourself One to Hit
by Gregory Scott Reid

It seems as though so many people are seeking more, wanting more, and expecting more in their lives, yet when pressed about what “more” would look like, rarely can they give a definitive answer.

They say things like, “I want to be happy,” or “I want to be rich,” or “I want the perfect mate.” To be honest, as wonderful as those statements are, they’re far too vague to ever be reached.

What does happiness look and feel like? What’s your definition of rich? How would you describe that perfect mate? Each of us has a different interpretation of what those things mean.

For example, I define happiness as having the freedom to do what I please, when I please to do it. Being rich means having tens of millions of dollars in the bank, and that perfect mate has movie actress charm and the heart of Mother Teresa.

To you, however, these descriptions could be way off course. For you, happiness could mean taking a long-needed vacation. Being rich could mean not having to struggle to make ends meet. Your perfect mate might be the one beside you all along.

The point is, we all need to define our goals, and most important, what they would look like if we saw them. Once we do that, the rest becomes easy. Once we know what we’re seeking, it’s simple to devise a plan to make it happen.

By saying, “I want to be happy, and that means taking that trip,” all you now have to do is get out your calendar, circle the date you want to go, get some brochures on the desired destination, and then plan a course of ACTION to make your dream come true. You might do it by asking your boss to take $50 a week out of your paycheck and save it toward the vacation. Or you might want to work an extra job to gain some additional cash.

You see, once you have your vision, you can create ways to make it happen because . . .

The easiest way to hit a goal is to give yourself one to hit.

Keep Smilin' !

Biz-Tips

Market With Your Order Form

Most customers have very busy lives and don't always remember what they did and where. When I worked in radio, we were often stunned to learn people often couldn't remember which station they won a prize from.

The same goes for customers. People may buy from you, then forget who they bought from just a few weeks later. That is a real problem if you are depending on word of mouth (which you should!).

Put your logo bright and bold on every one of your order forms. Make sure your name is stamped onto your customer's memory at the time of the sale.

Some smart business people turn their order form into a brochure. They include an ad and a full list of their products and services. The order form is on the final page. The brochure also gives you space to include a coupon for the next purchase.

A Little Humor to Start the Week

Proper Identification
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

A woman went into a bank to get a check cashed, but she didn't have an account with them. When the teller her asked for some identification, the woman showed her several charge cards, her social security card and a library card.

The teller told her they needed a driver's license, but the woman said she didn't have one.

"Don't you have anything with your picture on it?" the teller asked.

"Oh, sure," she said, as she flipped to a family photo in her wallet. "That's me in the back row."

Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson are hiking. They hiked all day long and then, having gotten tired, went to sleep in their tent.

Holmes wakes up deep at night, wakes Watson and says, "Watson, do you see the bright stars and do you notice how clear the sky is? What can you deduce from it?"

"Well, this clearly tells us the weather tomorrow is going to be dry and sunny."

"No Watson, it's simpler than that. It just means that somebody has stolen our tent."

-----

On a visit to my wife's native England for our honeymoon, we arrived at London's Gatwick Airport.

My new bride headed for the British passport control line while I, an American, waited in the foreigners' line. When my turn came, the customs officer asked me the purpose of my visit.

"Pleasure," I replied. "I'm on my honeymoon."

The officer looked first to one side of me, then the other. "That's very interesting, sir," he said as he stamped my passport. "Most men bring their wives with them."

-----

One day while driving with my 4 year old daughter, I beeped the horn by mistake.

She turned and looked at me for an explanation.

I said, "I did that by accident".

She replied, "I know that....'cause you didn't say YOU JERK afterwards!"

Feedback - Q&A

Hi Bob

We use Mapquest all the time to get driving directions, but I really hate to waste all that colored ink, and I don’t want the actual map – just the directions.  Any Ideas?

Marty – on the road again.

-----

Marty – I agree, it is a waste of ink. What I do, is to save the directions as a text file.  Then, whenever I need a copy, I can just print it.  To do this, get the directions using Mapquest, and then click on “File” at the top of your screen. Select “Safe As” and it will save it as a text file.

I set up a directory called “Driving Directions” and save them there. I always select “Reverse Route” on Mapquest and print that as well.  Let’s face it, if you are going someplace, the odds are you will return.

Bob

Something to Think About
By Jan Tincher

There are some that say the only difference between you and a tree is the informational and energy content of your respective bodies.

You, however, are of the privileged species. You have a nervous system that is capable of becoming aware of the energy and informational content.

You are able to consciously change the energy and informational content of your body. You are able to heal yourself of many bad thoughts. You are able to help the doctors by thinking the right thoughts, thereby enabling the healing to progress rapidly.

You are not a tree. Start accomplishing the things YOU are capable of accomplishing. Start taking control of your life.
