"Zero Cost" Online Business
by Bob OsgoodbyHow Much is Enough One of the most vexing questions in running a home business is how much to spend on advertising. While five percent of sales might be a formula, "as little as possible" seems to be the standard used by many startup ventures. People sign up as an affiliate with someone and think the world will beat a path to their web site.
In poker, the serious gamblers know if you don't have the cost of the ante, you can't expect to win. The same rule governs advertising -- you should not be in a business unless you have sufficient resources, to at least have a chance of success.
One of my regular surprises is a startup business, which has not planned for the costs of regular, on-going contact with their prospects -- advertising. One doesn't have to know a lot about the market to spot a loser in this category -- if a business has no war chest for marketing, it will fail. It's just a question of how long it takes, and how much it ultimately costs.
A sure sign of impending failure is what I refer to as the "zero cost" syndrome. Even a cursory look at your email will give you enough examples. Someone, usually new to computers, joins an ISP such as AOL, and find they are getting a lot of ads in their email. Many of these ads promise great riches with little or no work, and they get hooked.
They have heard however about spamming, so they find a free email provider; who cares if they lose that. They get some free web space -- why not, the cost is right -- and they are in business, or so they think.
Ad budgeting is one measure of commitment. No banker knowingly backs a new venture without the resources to succeed. A business with a limited budget to sell its product or services, must survive on word of mouth, the slowest and least reliable of all the media available.
Those who advertise for a living ask for enough money to get the job done. Remember, the QUALITY of the advertising is not affected by the budget, only the QUANTITY purchased at a particular time.
The Internet is extremely impersonal, and people look for clues when considering a purchase. A "zero cost" type of operation raises a huge "red flag" and will seldom succeed. Would you send off your hard earned money to someone with a Post Office Box and a free email account? I know I wouldn't.
The minimum you should have is your own domain with your own email address. You can forward that address to your ISP address, or better yet, use an email client such as Eudora or Pegasus which allows you to maintain a professional email address.
If you can't afford these minimum costs and some consistent advertising, you don't have the "ante" and don't belong in the game. Someone may survive on word of mouth with a low overhead business in the "brick and mortar" world, but the person with the "zero cost" online business is simply wasting their time.

In The News
Drink-Or-Die Conspirators Headed To Prison
A British court has sentenced three men to prison for their involvement in the so-called Drink-or-Die group, which cracked the copy protections on software and then distributed it over the Internet.
The three men received sentences ranging from 18 to 30 months, while a fourth man received a suspended sentence; all were charged with conspiracy to defraud. Prosecutors alleged that the piracy ring cost software companies millions of dollars in lost sales, and the verdicts were seen by some as a strong, clear message to software pirates. Others were critical of the government's case, however, saying that the men should have been charged with copyright violations rather than conspiracy. Security expert Peter Sommer, who served as a witness for the defense, said the government has no way of proving how much the ring cost software makers. He said the conspiracy case cost the government significantly more money and took much longer to try than a copyright case.
A spokesperson from the British Crown Prosecution Service said the charges were appropriate, commenting that the authorities do "not determine cases on the basis of how much they will cost to prosecute."
Computing on the Go -- Custom and Mobile Laptops
by Vangi ForiattoAnyone using technology knows by now that it’s a non-stop growth industry. Laptop computers are no exception, as they become ever more specialized. People who work outside of their offices have freedom that was only wishful thinking a few years ago. Their laptops are light-weight, geared toward various industries, and able to access company servers. That means field personnel don’t need to carry disks or use other methods of transferring information to their laptops. In many cases they have full access to all the files and other data they need, and can log on to the Internet from anywhere. These newer models are often referred to as ~mobile PCs~.
Panasonic offers laptops that are custom-designed for federal government employees, especially those in the military. Called ~Toughbooks~, these machines are rugged for fieldwork. All mechanical pieces are sealed, and these laptops can absorb shock, as well as resist dust, moisture, vibrations, and extreme temperatures. Toughbooks are designed for complex battlefield and reconnaissance systems such as GPS (Global Positioning System), especially now that computers play a central role in conducting war.
It's not just the military personnel that benefit from Toughbooks; they are also designed for other fieldwork. Their durable design resists environmental conditions, making them the ideal solution for many different locales. The computer monitor is viewable when working outdoors. Even people that don't need the laptop for work in a remote location will benefit from using the Toughbook; they can easily access customer information and run a variety of workforce management programs. Also, Toughbooks support national wireless communications, making it possible to pick up Internet signals wherever they are used. The laptop is very lightweight and portable - usually weighing less than three pounds.
Anyone who spends work time on the road can use this kind of laptop. People working outside the office can even manage and direct employees from afar, by uploading work assignments, managing paperwork, and transmitting data. Firefighters and emergency medical workers can keep track of the people they help with mobile PCs by using GPS and AVL (Automatic Vehicle Locating).
Panasonic is targeting Homeland Security agencies as potential users. Thanks to the Toughbook~s secure wireless capabilities, and the fact that it could help local, state, and federal departments connect. Some fire departments are also studying how they would perform for them.
Many people prefer to use a touch-screen mobile or Blackberry wireless. However, the laptop incorporates a variety of programs and accommodates many different uses, as well as creating and printing documents, accessing databases, and maintaining all records needed. It offers far more versatility over a Blackberry. The Toughbook is popular because of its durability and usefulness in almost any place. Panasonic markets the Toughbook as "powerful, rugged, and wireless". It's an ideal computer for technicians who spend their day working on power cables, or anyone else who works in an environment that may be hard on a piece of equipment. Considering the expense of a computer, and its relative fragility, this computer is both an accomplishment and a revolution in the computer industry.

Biz-Tips
by Kevin NunleyTwo Top Reasons Marketing Fails
Ads sometimes don't work. There are a lot of reasons why this happens, but more often than not, we can point to two downfalls that seem to hurt marketing.
Problem one is your ad isn't clear to the people it is talking to. Most of us have words and phrases we use in our industry that make little sense to our customers. Strive to put your
ideas in plain everyday language. If you have an industry buzz word, translate it into words everyone uses.Just as often, the one important benefit that will make people buy gets lost somewhere in the copy. Often when I get a long email message from someone, they'll have the important part in
the next to last paragraph. Someone in a hurry wouldn't find it.Problem two is marketing frequently isn't pointed at the right people. One guy who wanted to recruit members for his MLM opportunity advertised in the daily newspaper. Lots of people
read the paper, but very few were interested in network marketing. He would do far better to put his ad in a networking publication or ezine that specializes in his target audience.-----

A Little Humor to Start the Week
Mother's Day
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=When the good Lord was creating mothers He was into His sixth day of
"overtime" when the angel appeared and said, "You're doing a lot of fiddling
around this one."And the Lord said, "Have you read the specs on this order? She has to be
completely washable, but not plastic; Have 180 moveable parts... all
replaceable; Run on black coffee and leftovers; Have a lap that disappears
when she stands up; A kiss that can cure anything from a broken leg to a
disappointed love affair; And six pairs of hands."The angel shook her head slowly and said, "Six pairs of hands... no way."
"It's not the hands that are causing me problems," said the Lord. "It's the
three pairs of eyes that mothers have to have.""That's on the standard model?" asked the angel.
The Lord nodded. "One pair that sees through closed doors when she asks,
"What are you kids doing in there?" when she already knows. Another here in
the back of her head that sees what she shouldn't but what she has to know,
and of course the ones here in front that can look at a child when he goofs
up and say, "I understand and I Love You" without so much as uttering a
word.""Lord", said the angel, toughing His sleeve gently, "Come to bed.
Tomorrow...""I can't," said the Lord, "I'm so close to creating something so close to
myself. Already I have one who heals herself when she is sick... can feed a
family of six on one pound of hamburger... and can get a nine-year-old to
stand under a shower."The angel circled the model of a mother very slowly. "It's too soft," she
sighed."But tough!" said the Lord excitedly. "You cannot imagine what this mother
can do or endure.""Can it think?"
"Not only think, but it can reason and compromise," said the Creator.
Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek. "There's a
leak," she pronounced. "I told You. You were trying to put too much into
this model.""It's not a leak," said the Lord, "it's a tear."
"What's it for?"
"It's for joy, sadness, disappointment, pain, loneliness and pride."
"You are a genius," said the angel.
The Lord looked somber. "I didn't put it there."
(Happy Mother's Day)-----
The lifeguard told the mother to make her young son stop urinating in the pool.
"Everyone knows," the mother lectured him, "that from time to time, young children will urinate in a pool."
"Oh really?" said the lifeguard, "from the diving board!?!?"

On our 25th anniversary, my husband took me out to dinner. Our teenage daughters said they'd have dessert waiting for us when we returned. After we got home, we saw that the dining room
table was beautifully set with china, crystal and candles, and there was a note that read: "Your dessert is in the refrigerator. We are staying with friends, so go ahead and do something we wouldn't do!"My husband turned to me and said,
"I suppose we could vacuum."-----
