Automatic Submission Scams
by Bob OsgoodbyDid you know there is software and services available, which will allow you to automatically submit your ads or articles you have written to web sites and to newsletters?
"Wow - what a great idea!" you might think. I can submit my ads or articles to thousands of Web Sites and Newsletters with a single keystroke. "What a time saver!"
Some people send out a dozen or more like this everyday. Is this doing them any good? Well maybe yes, and maybe no. Let's first examine the different types of web sites that accept free ads, and why.
Many web sites that accept free ads, do it purely to collect email addresses, which they can then sell as targeted lists. They don't really care if your ad is ever seen. In fact, many have a high limit of 300 ads. When the next one is submitted, the oldest is dropped, and the process continues.
With thousands of ads submitted hourly, how long do you think your ad will remain on their site - a minute or two - hardly worth your time. The flip side is you will suddenly find a lot more unsolicited email arriving daily from those who bought your address. If you like receiving unsolicited email, I guess this is good.
Other web sites do care if your ad is seen. So what is their motive? They are trying to build an advertiser base, and hope you will purchase a paid ad from them. Ads submitted to sites like this usually have a life of a week or more, and can be renewed indefinitely. Their goal is to attract people to their site and hope that you do business as a result of your ad.
The first group couldn't care less if you send them multiple email addresses on a frequent basis - they never see the ads. Their software automatically collects your email address, checks for duplicates, and adds it to their file.
The second group however, and all newsletters published on a regular basis that allow free ads, are a different story. When they receive ads, each one is checked manually. They usually only permit one ad per cycle, and if you submit 7-12 ads a day, you will quickly overwhelm their processing capabilities. To them, this is spamming. Their only recourse is to "fight fire with fire". What they do is automatically filter out the ads submitted using this type of software. They will never see your ad submissions.
So what does this automatic submission software do for/to you. In the first example, your ads might have a useful life measured in minutes. In the second case your ads are "blocked" from the sites that will produce your best results.
Once you are blocked (depending on how they do it) you may never be able to submit ads to these quality sites again - even if you do it manually. Some block at the email address level. Once an address is blocked, their filters will automatically delete your incoming email, whether it is an ad or not. Maybe automatic submission isn't the best investment you could make.
Some companies are sending out articles written by "would be authors" for a fee. These articles cover the gamut from Aardvark hunting to Zip Lock Bags and are not targeted at all. Most reputable publishers have a relationship with authors that have been around for awhile, and have grown to trust them. They trust not only the accuracy of their content, but also know that their grammar and spelling are up to par, and they won't have to do a rewrite of their article. Most publishers simply trash articles received like this, and for the most part it is not a good investment.

In The News
Penn To Head Study Of Cyberattacks
A new program sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security will attempt to collect real-time data on cyberattacks in the private sector, with the goal of using such data to prevent future attacks.
Led by the University of Pennsylvania, the Cyber Incident Detection Analysis Center will install monitors on corporate networks. In the event of an attack on the network, the monitors, which will cost companies $10,000 annually, will transmit data to the Institute for Strategic Threat Analysis and Response at the university, where it will be analyzed and made available to researchers at other institutions. Those with access to the data will not be able to see which company it came from, and researchers will not be directly involved in prosecuting individuals responsible for cyberattacks.
Charles Fleming, executive director of the center, said a pilot program will be carried out before the monitors become widely available.
Foreclosure
by Bob LugenForeclosure isn't a pleasant experience, however it is a process that is sometimes faced. Foreclosure is legal action taken by a bank designed to force the sale of a financed property. This can only begin after payments have been missed. Technically banks may commence foreclosure proceedings after one missed payment, but they will usually wait until the third or fourth payments have been overlooked. The foreclosure process is different between states, but every state mandates that the owners must be given sufficient notice of the impending foreclosure.
A foreclosure notice is a serious matter and needs to be confronted diligently, but it should not be reason to panic. There are options available even when foreclosure proceedings have started. Once a foreclosure notice is first recieved doesn't mean that the house needs to be vacated. If a foreclosure house is left empty it will be considered abandoned and the owner will lose their rights to it. If simply walking away from the whole mess is what is desired there are legal ways to do this and legal council should be consulted before doing anything rash. An owner must be prepared to fight for their home.
The first action that should be taken is to contact the financing bank as soon as the notification is received. Once the situation is explained to the bank and they are assured that the intention to pay when you able is there. They may be willing to hold off on the foreclosure. There are two choices available. You can either fight for your home, or attempt a ~short sale~. A short sale is the speedy sale of a property at risk for foreclosure. Speed is the operative word in this case. You must act before the foreclosure comes into effect. The notification of a foreclosure does not affect your right to sell your home, but a foreclosure does.
There are two other types of remedies for a foreclosure. You can seek a ~Special Forbearance~ which is a legal document issued in special cases such as job loss, or a sudden increase in expenses, that protects your home from foreclosure. A mortgage modification can also be attempted. This is basically the process of renegotiating your mortgage amount to give an allowance to be able to catch up on missed payments.
When a foreclosure is complete many things will happen at once. If the bank is able to sell the property for an amount that is more than the existing balance the remainder of the money goes to the owner. If the bank sells the property at a loss then the outstanding amount is treated as debt against the home owner. Unfortunately an eviction from the property will also take place quite rapidly. The typical time allowed for an eviction after a foreclosure is complete is only three days.
Considering the seriousness of the situation, if you receive a foreclosure notice, there is no time to be lost. One thing to keep in mind that foreclosures usually end up costing the bank money and if an owner is forthcoming and sincerely interested in paying them back they may be up for negotiation.

Biz-Tips
by Kevin NunleyA Plan For Promoting an Affiliate Program
Affiliate programs are a great way to earn a little extra money each month working the Internet. While some people earn up to $1,000 or more per month, most who work affiliate programs seriously land $200 to $700.
Here's a brief plan for making money with these programs: 1. Put a two or three line ad about the program in the signature file of all your emails (that bit of info that goes after your note). "Sig" files are a powerful way to include a marketing message along with your personal notes--probably the most effective marketing tool of all.
2. Get your own web site. It's hard to establish your own identity and customer trust if you are sending people to a generic site provided by the program.
3. Place free ads on sites where other people are pushing affiliate programs. These are usually the same folks who buy.
4. Place paid ads in ezines.

A Little Humor to Start the Week
Pilot Pride
=-=-=-=-=-=As one of relatively few female airline pilots, I've often been mistaken for a flight attendant, ticket agent or even a snack bar employee. Occasionally people will see me in uniform and ask if I'm a "real" pilot. Still others congratulate me for making it in a male-dominated field.
One day, I was in the restroom before a flight. I was at the sink, brushing my teeth, when a woman walked through the door and looked over at me. "My sister would be so proud of you!" she remarked.
I figured her sister must also be in the airline business, so I smiled and asked why.
Replied the woman, "She's a dentist."

A couple stayed at the Watergate Hotel while visiting Washington, D,C. The wife was concerned. "What if, after all these years, the place is still bugged?" The husband says, "I'll look for a bug."
He looks behind the drapes, behind the pictures, and under the rug. "Aha." Under the rug was a disc with 4 screws. He gets his screwdriver, unscrews the screws and throws the disc out the window.
The next morning, the hotel manager asks the couple "How was your room?" "How was the service?" "How was your stay at the Watergate?"
The husband says, "Why are you asking me all of these questions?"
The hotel manager says "Well, the room under you complained of the chandelier falling on them."

A motorcycle patrolman was rushed to the hospital with an inflamed appendix. The doctors operated and advised him that all was well. However, the patrolman kept feeling something pulling at the hairs on his chest. Worried that it might be a second surgery the doctors hadn't told him about, he finally got enough energy to pull his hospital gown down enough so he could look at what was making him so uncomfortable.
Taped firmly across his hairy chest were three wide strips of adhesive tape, the kind that doesn't come off easily. Written in large black letters was the sentence.
"Get well quick ..... from the nurse you gave a ticket to last week."

Feedback - Q&A
Bob – I bought a new printer that had a $50 rebate promised. I mailed the rebate form, rebate receipt, and UPC code to them as instructed, but never did receive it – any advice?
Bill in Seattle
-----
Bill - Rebates are many times a shady business. Retailers, manufacturers, and rebate companies rely on a certain percentage of rebates never being paid. A surprising number of rebate forms become mysteriously lost.
If it's a retail store that is offering the rebate, ask yourself a simple question: Why isn't it just on sale? The store doesn't have any good reason to offer a rebate, since it could just as easily have a sale—if it in fact wanted you to have the product at a lower price. It doesn't, and that's the point. When you see that a store is offering you a rebate, remember that back at HQ some executive is betting against you and hoping you'll slip up, calculating the odds that you will lose the receipt, go on vacation, or write in a wrong number.
The customer's best defense is not to purchase items with rebates. The second best defense is to make copies of all rebate forms and send rebate forms by registered mail. That way the customer can prove that he has complied with the terms of the rebate.
